World Press Photo invites journalists from anywhere in the world to participate in the 2020 Digital Storytelling Contest. The Digital Storytelling Contest, open to short documentary film and interactive productions, recognizes and rewards forms of visual storytelling enabled by digital technologies. The Digital Storytelling Contest awards visual stories in three categories:

  1. Interactive
  2. Long
  3. Short

Participation Rules:

  3. Agents or representatives entering on behalf of a production team confirm, by entering, that each member of the production team accepts all the entry rules.
  4. Entries in all categories must have been produced or first published in 2019.
  5. All entries must include the contact details of the visual journalist(s) and of the production’s contact person.
  6. 7. All entries must include a title, synopsis, general credit and complete list of the production team.
  7. All productions must either have English-language audio and/or text or must be subtitled in English.
  8. Entries in all categories must be available online. The URL’s for the productions entered must be provided when submitting through the entry website. If links are password protected, the password must be indicated on the entry form.
  9. Nominated productions must be available online to the public, by the nominee announcement on 25 February 2020.
  10. Members of the jury for the 2020 Digital Storytelling Contest may not enter productions in which they have been an integral part of the production team to the contest. This includes, but is not limited to, roles such as Director, Producer, Editor, Cinematographer, or Director of Photography. The organization reserves the right to determine whether a jury members’ involvement in production is acceptable.
  11. The Digital Storytelling Contest is only open to entries that include the work of a professional visual journalist. Every visual journalist must provide valid proof of current professional status. Examples of documents that count as proof include, but are not limited to:

  • journalism union membership card; OR

  • The organization reserves the right to ask for additional information to help clarify the professional status.

Prizes:

All three nominees in each of the three categories are invited to the World Press Photo Festival in Amsterdam. A representative from each of the nominated productions will have their travel and lodging paid for by the World Press Photo Foundation. The nominees in each category will receive a diploma and a Golden Eye Award, presented during the annual Awards Show. The Digital Storytelling Contest also now has two headline awards: the World Press Photo Interactive of the Year and the World Press Photo Online Video of the Year.
