The One Planet Fellowship is offering early-career scientists who are eager to develop climate adaptation solutions for African smallholder farmers to apply for the One Planet Fellowship for 2020. The One Planet Fellowship seeks to build a vibrant, highly connected, and inter-generational network of African and European scientist leaders equipped to use a gender lens to help Africa's smallholder farmers adapt to a changing climate. the One Planet Fellowship invests in high-potential early career researchers from Africa and Europe, and accelerates their scientific careers so that they are better able to develop relevant and gender-responsive climate adaptation solutions aimed at African smallholder farmers.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. Be a citizen of the following countries: Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, and Zambia.
  2. Be 40 years of age or younger by March 31, 2020.
  3. Have at least a master’s degree or equivalent in any discipline relevant to climate change adaptation with a focus on agriculture and food systems.
  4. Have research experience in any of the five thematic areas as outlined in the One Planet Scientific Fellowship Framework.
  5. Reside in Africa and be actively engaged in research, policy and/or practice relevant to climate change and Africa’s smallholder agriculture.
  6. Not a previous beneficiary of the AWARD Fellowship initiative.

Funding:

Inspired by the AWARD Fellowship Model, the five-year, USD 19.2 million initiative seeks to invest in up to 630 competitively selected agricultural scientists. Selected candidates will participate in an intensive, three-year non-residential, career acceleration process aimed at fostering leadership skills, strengthening scientific research skills including integrating gender into their research, and catalyzing research partnerships and networks. Candidates who complete the three-year process will become One Planet Laureates.

About One Planet Fellowship:

The One Planet Fellowship brings together an inter-generational network of scientists from across Africa and Europe and contributes towards building a robust pipeline of climate science leaders. One Planet Fellowship’s interventions target high potential scientists in a career acceleration process aimed at: Fostering leadership skills, strengthening scientific research skills and catalyzing research partnerships and networks. Announced at the One Planet Summit in 2017, The One Planet Fellowship is a career-accelerator designed to enhance the capacity of high potential agricultural researchers focused on climate change adaptation, by building their leadership, scientific research, networking, and mentoring skills.
