International Intermediate Fellowships

Wellcome announces it's international intermediate fellowships for 2020. This scheme offers nationals of low and middle-income countries the opportunity to lead their own research programs. The level of funding is usually of £400,000 to £800,000 for salary and research expenses for 5 years.

Eligibility:

You can apply for this opportunity if: 

  1. You're a national of a low- or middle-income country.
  2. You are based at an eligible host organization in a low or middle-income country for the research project. This could be your current organization or a different one.
  3. Your proposed research focuses on a health priority in a low or middle-income country.
  4. You must have a sponsor who is ahead of department or equivalent like a center director or head of school in your host organization.
  5. If you plan to work for more than four months outside your host organization, you must also have an additional sponsor at that location. The additional sponsor must agree to provide the space and resources you'll need.
  6. You have sponsorship from an eligible host organization in a low or middle-income country.
  7. You are driving your own research and be ready to lead an independent research program.
  8. You have a PhD or you're a clinically qualified doctor and qualified to enter higher specialist training, vet, dentist or clinically qualified psychologist.
  9. You have a significant research experience.
  10. You have made important contributions to your area of research like publications, patents, software development or an impact on health policy or practice.
  11. You have a permanent or rolling employment contract, but only if you're at the early stages of an independent career. 

Your research proposal should reflect:

  1. Your research contributions.
  2. The scientific merit of your proposed project.
  3. The significance of the research.
  4. The feasibility of your proposal.
  5. The suitability of your sponsor and host environment for both your research and for the development of your independent career.

Funding:

  • An international intermediate fellowship is for five years unless you want to hold it on a part-time basis. It cannot be renewed. 
  • The support includes:
  1. A basic salary determined by your host organization.
  2. Personal removal expenses.
  3. Overheads.
  4. Research expenses, directly related to your proposal.
