The Department of Neuroscience at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is offering a three-year full-time Ph.D. fellowship in Cognitive Motor Neuroscience.

Project Description:

The project that the Ph.D. fellow will work on is entitled The Functional Role of Perception of Movements. In the project, the fellow will be investigating the link between neural information of the primary motor cortex and the conscious experience of movement perception. The main experimental technique that is going to be employed are recordings of motor evoked potentials elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation in combination with subjective reports of the conscious experience of performed movement. In addition, the fellow will investigate which role the conscious experience of the performed movements has in the acquisition of new motor skills. The Ph.D. fellow will work in parallel with another Ph.D. fellow from the CoInAct group employed at the Section of Philosophy working on a Ph.D. project on the philosophy of action.

Responsibilities:

The fellow key tasks as a Ph.D. student at SUND are:

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision.
  • Complete Ph.D. courses or another equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points.
  • Participate in active research environments including a stay at another research team.
  • Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to his Ph.D. project.
  • Teach and disseminate his knowledge.
  • Write a Ph.D. thesis on the grounds of his project.

Assessment Criteria:

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants:
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project e.g. Neuroscience, Neuroimaging, Experimental Psychology, Exercise Physiology, Human Physiology, Cognitive Science, biomedical engineering, or similar with a curiosity-driven interest in understanding the relationship between conscious perception of movement and electrophysiological measurements in humans.

Other important criteria are:

  • The grade point average achieved.
  • Professional qualifications were relevant to the Ph.D. project.
  • Previous publications.
  • Relevant work experience.
  • Other professional activities.
  • The curious mindset with a strong interest in understanding the link between human movement neuroscience and cognitive functions.
  • English Language skills.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research work coupling knowledge from health, natural, and humanities science.
  • Strong data analysis skills with the ability to do programming independently.

Fellowship Place:

The fellowship will take place at the Department of Neuroscience, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The university offers creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international interdisciplinary research environment. The research facilities include modern laboratories with equipment for doing human electrophysiological (EEG, EMG) recordings including non-invasive brain stimulation (TMS, tDCS), behavioral measurements, biomechanical measurements, and virtual reality.

Terms of the Fellowship:

  • The employment as a Ph.D. fellow is full time and for 3 years.
  • It is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a Ph.D. student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.
  • The Ph.D. study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the Ph.D. program (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree.
  • Salary, pension, and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 27.593 DKK /approx. 3.707 EUR (April 2020-level) plus pension.
