DAAD in cooperation with the climate competence centers SASSCAL (Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management) and WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use), announced the DAAD ClimapAfrica fellowship program, that aims to foster application-oriented research results to tackle climate change in southern and western Africa.

The program funds postdoctoral research projects and offers a platform for collaboration in thematic working groups composed of postdoctoral fellows and African alumni of German funding initiatives with expertise in the field of climate research. Fellows and Alumni will increase their research impact and output through a comprehensive training and support program, including general skills training, science policy advising, and science management. The working groups serve as a platform to connect with peers, regional and international experts, and practitioners and to build a growing professional network across Africa. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • ClimapAfrica addresses future African leaders in climate research and protection. The program has two tracks – one offering postdoctoral fellowships and one for alumni of German funding initiatives.
  • The qualification for this program requires a PhD degree, the nationality of an African country, and a host institution in western/southern Africa.

Research Fields:

The program sponsors a variety of research fields linked to climate change. It should be possible to assign the postdoctoral research project to one of the following research areas:

  • Agriculture.
  • Biodiversity.
  • Climate systems.
  • Economics.
  • Education.
  • Energy.
  • Food security.
  • Human security.
  • Informatics.
  • (adapted) Land-use.
  • Sustainability of tree savannahs and forests.
  • Water security and water resources.

Note: The applicant can realize his research only in the following western and southern African countries:

Angola, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cape Verde Islands, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Madagascar and Bénin, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Togo, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Evaluation Criteria:

The main criteria for evaluation are:

  • The achievements of the applicant to date (scientific and other qualifications, and particular conditions which have influenced the academic progress).
  • The quality of the proposed project and the consistency with long-term career planning and ideas for the joint postdoc- alumni working groups. Other factors are the coherence and stringency of the research proposal.

Funding:

The basic fellowship consists of:

  • A research allowance sum of max. EUR 10.000,- (depends on research target and will be divided into multiple payments.
  • A monthly allowance of EUR 800,- the amount of the payment has been designed and calculated to cover the applicant's living costs such as rent/accommodation, provision, and board.
  • A flat-rate travel allowance.
  • An accident, personal liability, and health insurance (with receipts).

Additionally, support for the following activities can be granted (subject to availability of funds):

  • Short-term research stays in Germany (2 to 6 months).
  • Mobility fellowships for active participation (poster or talk) in relevant international conferences in the field of climate change/ climate research.

Fellow's Obligations:

At the end of the fellowship the fellow must provide:

  • A detailed report on the findings of the research.
  • A summary of the activities within the alumni network.
  • An assessment of the future development of the career paths, the research topic, and the alumni working group activities.
  • Additionally, an interim report is mandatory after 6 months and 18 months (depending on the duration of the scholarship).

Founded in 1925, the DAAD is the world's largest funding organization for the students and researchers. Its members are German institutions of Higher Education as well as student bodies. Its activities include the awarding of grants and scholarship but also the internationalization of German universities, the promotion of German studies and language abroad, and assisting and advising decision-makers in developing countries on establishing effective universities as well as on matters of education and development policy.
