Description

Cambridge Australia Scholarships (CAS) provides scholarships for Australian graduates to undertake Masters and PhD studies at the University of Cambridge, England. To be eligible, all applicants must have first been accepted to attend the University of Cambridge in their chosen course.

The Cambridge Australia Scholarship for Queensland was established by the Hon Justice Anthe Philippides, in conjunction with The Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust.

As a student, it was my dream to study at Cambridge. I believe that my undergraduate degree at UQ provided an extremely strong foundation for my application to Cambridge. The law courses at UQ are rigorous and demanding, and I was fortunate to be taught by many inspiring lecturers. I would encourage all interested students to apply, and not to be dissuaded by the fear of rejection.

 - Daniel Thambar, 2020 Cambridge Australia Scholarship recipient

To anyone on the fence about applying, especially young women or undergraduates for whom studying somewhere like Cambridge is a novel concept: you are a much better candidate than you think you are! Don’t let a lack of confidence limit your ambitions.

 - Sophie Phillip, 2020 Cambridge Australia Scholarship recipient

About the Donor

The Honourable Justice Anthe Philippides

Her Honour has been a judge of the Supreme Court for over 19 years.  She graduated from UQ with a BA and LLB, receiving the University Medal in Law, and from Cambridge University with a LLM.  Over her career, she achieved many firsts.  She was the first woman of non-Anglo Celtic background to become a barrister in Queensland and to be appointed a Senior Counsel in Australia.  She was the first woman to be elected President of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand. Her appointment to the Supreme Court in 2000, and subsequently to the Queensland Court of Appeal in 2014, marked the first appointments of a woman of immigrant parents to a superior court and to an appellate court in Australia.

She is a long standing advocate for diversity and inclusion in the law. Recently, she established the first Cambridge Australia Scholarship in Queensland for postgraduate study in law. She is the Queensland Patron of the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association. In 2017 she founded the Music and the Arts Circle, providing access to the arts and social support to indigenous law students and young professionals. She is patron of The Legal Forecast - Creative and of the Law Orchestra Queensland.

“The opportunity given to me to study at Cambridge altered the trajectory of my legal career. I benefitted enormously from it. It is wonderful to be able to give back by enabling someone else to have the same opportunity.” - The Honourable Justice Anthe Philippides.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Cambridge Australia Scholarship (CAS), applicants must hold Australian Citizenship, and have completed the majority of their pre-tertiary level education in Australia.

How to apply

Application Dates

The application closing date is 10pm Thursday 3 December 2020, Brisbane time.
This is 12pm Thursday 3 December 2020 Cambridge time.

Submitting your application by this time will ensure you meet the two deadlines stated on the Application Deadlines page.

Applicants who have been successful in their application for funding will be notified by the end of March (for PhDs) or in June/July (for Masters) for entry in October.

All applications for both a place and a scholarship must be made through the Graduate Admissions Office at the University of Cambridge.

By submitting one Graduate Application Form (GAF) per course you will be considered for:

  • Admission to a course of graduate study or research by the relevant Department or Faculty at Cambridge;
  • Admission to a College by one or more of the Cambridge Colleges; and
  • Funding offered by the Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust.

(Note that all scholars at Cambridge are required to be a member of one of the Cambridge Colleges).

Applying for funding

Applicants who wish to be considered for funding by Cambridge Australia Scholarships should complete the funding section of the graduate online application (via the Applicant Portal). Only after a conditional offer from the university has been made can a student be considered for a scholarship.

To ensure that you are considered for a CAS scholarship, you must tick the box that reads 'Do you wish to be considered for funding, including merit-based scholarship?'

If applicants are successful in obtaining a place at the University of Cambridge, they will be given a conditional offer by the Graduate Admissions office. These applicants will then be considered for any awards for which they are eligible, including the Cambridge Australia Scholarships.

Interviews are required for Cambridge Australia Masters Scholarships, but are not required, at this point, for other scholarships.
