The Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s national institute for data science founded by the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL, Warwick, and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
Our mission is to make great leaps in data science research in order to change the world for the better. Our goals are to undertake world-class research in data science, apply its research to real world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of data scientists, and shape the public conversation around data.
Our doctoral studentship scheme leverages the strengths and expertise of our partners while harnessing the Turing’s unique convening power as the UK’s national institute for data science, to foster and develop exciting interdisciplinary engagement with the wider data science community and the world at large.
Studying at The Alan Turing Institute offers students a unique opportunity to undertake a data science focused PhD in a multidisciplinary environment where more than 150 researchers from different disciplines’ core to data science work side-by-side to solve problems, generate ideas and transform research into real-world impact.
Mathematics, statistics, computing along with the social sciences underpin much of the Turing’s research, and because the Institute simultaneously aspires to serve society’s needs, engineering, ethics and design are also included in the research fabric.
Our Turing doctoral students are predominantly based at the Institute headquarters at the British Library in the heart of London’s vibrant Knowledge Quarter. They will register for their doctorate at one of our university partner institutions, where they will also spend time over the course of their PhD. Students will be supervised by faculty from our partner universities who are also fellows of the Institute or substantively engaged with us.

Studentships include a generous tax-free stipend of £20,500 per annum, a travel allowance and tuition fees for a period of 3.5 years.
