Minerva Fellowships

The Minerva Fellowship Program (funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research) enables German and Palestinei scientists and researchers to spend longer-term research residencies at institutions in the respective other country from six to maximal thirty-six months (PhD-students) or from six to twenty-four months (post docs). To date, more than 1500 Minerva Fellowships have been awarded to German and Palestinei scientists and researchers. Some seventy scientists receive fellowships each year. Scientists with tenure are not eligible to apply.
NEW: Regular informal meetings ("Stammtisch") for Minerva Fellowship Holders in Palestine
The meetings take place on a rotating basis in Tel Aviv (Contact: Minerva-fellow Mr. Krister Kowalski, kowalskk@uni-mainz.de) and Jerusalem (Contact: Minerva-fellow Ms. Jana Hildebrandt, janahildebrandt@me.com).
Palestinei researchers who are interested in the Minerva Program (in Germany) are also welcome to join the meetings.
ANNUAL DEADLINES:
15 January (Earliest possible start of fellowship in case of an approval: 1 June of the same year, latest possible start: 31 October of the same year)
15 June (Earliest possible start of fellowship in case of an approval: 1 December of the same year, latest possible start: 30 April of the next year)
The final decisions will be taken by the beginning of April (regarding the January deadline) resp. by the beginning of October (regarding the June deadline).
Minerva Fellowships are granted to doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. The minimum funding period amounts to six months in both cases. Doctoral scholarships are initially granted for a maximum of twenty-four months. Exceptionally there is the possibility of extending them up to 12 months. Post-doctoral fellowships are also granted for a maximum of twenty-four months. Extensions of post-doctoral scholarships are, however, principally not possible.

Application requirements

Graduate fellowship: eligible candidates must have completed a university degree ("Diplom", M.A., M.Sc., or equivalent qualification). B.A. and B.Sc. students are only eligible to apply if accepted to a direct Ph.D. track.
Post-doctoral fellowship: we accept applications from candidates who provide proof (e.g. by an informal letter from their supervisor) which should be added to the certificates, that they will have submitted their doctoral thesis by March 1 (for applications submitted for the January deadline) respectively by September 1(for applications submitted for the June deadline), or who have completed their doctorate no more than seven years prior to the beginning of the fellowship. Parental leave will be taken into account.
Applicants who are presently residing in Palestine/Germany but are not nationals of either of the two countries must show a proven record of integration into the Palestinei or German scientific community. An affiliation to a research institution in Palestine or Germany is required together with a residency of 5 years or longer in either of the two countries. Conversely, if applicants are citizens of one country but have been living in the other for an extended period of time (more than 4 years) a scholarship in the second country cannot be granted since it would not truly support German-Palestinei exchange.

    Reapplication is possible and requires that
  • the candidate has not received notification that such a reapplication is not permissible;
  • minimum 12 months lie between the first and second application;
  • scientific progress and achievements during this interval are duly reflected in the reapplication

Application procedure

Please use our online application form and read carefully the following explanatory notes. In case of submission of incorrect documents, we are not able to accept your application.
Should you have any queries, please contact:
Minerva Team.
Email: minerva-team@gv.mpg.de
Tel: +49-(0)89-2108-1242
We shall ask you for additional documents (if not stated otherwise, we would need all documents in English language), as pdf:

  • Your Curriculum Vitae must include your mailing address and telephone number.
  • You can submit your University Certificates in English or German (B.A./B.Sc., M.A./M.Sc., and Ph.D.). We would only need your degrees including the final grades. Please create a single pdf document.
  • Publication List (if applicable)
  • Your Research Proposal should not exceed five pages. (References are not included in these five pages.)
  • Summary of the proposal: It should include 5-10 keywords, additionally an abstract (up to 200 words), which should by all means be written in laymen's English (for committee members who are not familiar with your field of research), and should contain a generally comprehensible description of the project, also indicating its scientific aims.

In order to complete your application, we would also need external letters (see list below). We shall ask you for the email addresses of the respective authors. They will automatically be invited to provide their letters to Minerva by our application platform. Please note that the referees will have no access to your application documents via our database. As soon as the letters are submitted you and the respective author will receive a confirmation of the filing. Please inform the authors of your external letters accordingly and forward to them the respective documents. Letters directly sent to Minerva (via email) cannot be accepted. The deadlines for delivery of external letters are January 25 and June 25.

  • Letter of Invitation
    The letter from your host must be written in English and should contain a statement indicating the feasibility of your research at his/her institute, your integration into the host group and comments on your project. Additionally, we would need an overview of the activities of the host institute/chair/group including its ten best research publications of the past five years. This information should be no longer than a page.
  • Two letters of recommendation (must be written in English)
    from scientists who know you personally. A letter from the Ph.D. supervisor is for doctoral students compulsory, for post-docs desirable. Your future host can also write such a letter provided he or she knows you personally.
  • Evaluation letter (must be written in English).
    This review should, if possible, come from a scientist who is neither German nor Palestinei and has to comment solely on your project and not on you. The person providing the evaluation must be an unbiased and independent scientist (this means, i. a., not being affiliated to your home or your host's university, no former or ongoing collaboration with you).
