LSX Call for Applications

The Jacobs Foundation invests in the future of young people so that they become socially responsible and productive members of society.

In order to achieve this goal, children and youth must be given better opportunities for positive development and equitable access to education. Whatever their background, place of residence or family income, all children should have the chance to reach their full potential.

Early childhood plays a key role in this context; research has shown that this is the most important developmental phase in a person’s life. Moreover, educational programs and resources need to address each child’s individual needs. In the 21st century, new technologies aimed at facilitating individualized learning are becoming increasingly important. This is why the Jacobs Foundation is funding global research on learning and child development, supporting innovative scientists and implementing practical projects in early childhood and rural livelihoods.

Program

Breakthroughs and insights now emerge regularly from the learning sciences. However, these insights are slow to be accepted and integrated into schools, family support systems, and the social consciousness in positive ways. Too often, new findings are either left to wilt in inaccessible academic journals, contorted by splashy headlines, or too complicated to lead to real policy changes.

This is why the Jacobs Foundation, together with the think tank New America and the International Congress on Infant Studies (ICIS) created a new fellowship: The Learning Sciences Exchange (LSX). The LSX aims to create a conversation between scientists, journalists, entertainers, and policy makers. The programme responds to the needs of all three sectors which are usually operating in isolation from each other.

The fellows hail from Europe and North America. Each participant enjoys time for cross-disciplinary thinking. Fellows have the opportunity to write about ways to bring ideas in learning sciences to fruition and how to communicate them with the greatest influence. The LSX envisions that the 12 fellows discuss key issues by forming three teams – each composed of four people (one person from each sector). A team approach provides amazing opportunities for individuals to explore each other’s thinking from the perspective of the sector in which each is an expert. The team also comes to appreciate how each sector typically deals with new issues.

Twelve fellows will be chosen, three from each of the four sectors (learning science, policy, journalism, and entertainment). A high-level advisory board will guide each fellow with advice and input. At the culmination of the fellowship, the LSX Fellows will present an LSX Talk—a short, highly polished multimedia presentation of to be developed for a general audience and livestreamed internationally.

Stipend for each fellow of 5’000 USD

How to Apply

  • In addition to the online application, all LSX Fellowship applicants must submit short personal statements on the assets that they bring and what they hope to gain (no more than 200 words each);
  • a description of a particular area of study or project that they will embark upon that would be suitable for the LSX;
  • a brief description of a desired site visit (this would be a site or facility where fellows could observe day-to-day life outside their field; examples are a developmental psychology lab, policymaker’s offices or town hall meetings, a family health center, a producer’s studio, etc.);
  • a résumé or CV;
  • a list of previous projects or published articles;
  • and a short, 1-2 minute video statement on their motivation for applying.

If an applicant is selected for the short list, the LSX will request that they submit references.
