In this section you will find information on student identity cards, student cafeterias, employment opportunities and student organisations active in Croatia.

We advise you to use this information to shape your own, unique student experience while studying in Croatia.

In Croatia the identification card for full-time students is the iksica (or “X-ica). The student card is used as proof for realising student rights and benefits such as subsidised meals, public transportation, discounts in certain public institutions and so on.

International students in Croatia receive a student card if they fall into one of these categories:

  • Students arriving through the CEEPUS network
  • Students in bilateral exchange programmes of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the Agency for Mobility and EU Programmes
  • ERASMUS students

Students studying in Croatia privately (free-movers) or as part of a faculty-level exchange programme are not entitled to a student card but only a temporary card which carries a benefit of subsidised meals in student cafeterias (menza).

All students entitled to subsidised meals by submitting the student card (iksica) can eat daily at student cafeterias (menza) at affordable prices.

Every month, a specific amount of money per student card is authorised for meals. This amount cannot be exceeded or accumulated over more than one month (the amount is restored each month regardless of the amount left over in the previous month). The status of the student card can be checked at the bottom of each receipt or on the University Computer Centre (SRCE) web page.

Students studying in Croatia privately (free-movers) or as part of a faculty-level exchange programme are not entitled to subsidised meals in student cafeterias and they have to pay the full meal price which is around 20 Kuna (approx. 2.50 EUR) per meal.

Student cafeterias are usually located at faculties and student resident halls. For more information on the whereabouts of student cafeterias, please consult the International Relations Office of the higher education institution you intend to apply to.

All full-time students at Croatian higher education institutions can apply for occasional student work. The same applies for international students.

In Croatia the employment of full-time students is handled by the Student Service Centre (Student servis) which has subsidiaries in all university towns and elsewhere.

International students attending short study programmes (exchange students, guest students) have to check with the higher education institution they are applying to whether or not they are allowed occasional student work via the student service centre and under which conditions.

If an international student is allowed occasional student work via the Student Service Centre, she/he can register by coming in person to the Student Service Centre and filling out a form. This will require the following:

  • Student Transcript Book (“Indeks”)
  • Certificate of full-time student status in the ongoing academic year (from the Croatian faculty they are enrolled at)
  • Two photographs
  • Identification document or passport
  • Certificate of having opened a giro account in a bank in Croatia.

If you are planning to travel to Croatia for study purposes or even to discover Croatia before planning your long stay it is better to stay in a villa for residence rather than in hotel, we provide you with a full websites where you can find your residence.
