The conference is organised by the Irish Association for Russian, Central and East European Studies and is hosted and supported by the School of History and Geography and the School of Communications at Dublin City University.
Scholarship on Central and Eastern Europe has variously focussed on the relationship between the state and the individual, governments and industries, political regimes and their discontents. Whether approached in terms of historical experiences and legacies, political and economic transformations, cultural and memory studies or the evolution of communication and language, these relationships emerge as multifaceted and endlessly fascinating. As we observe the shifting political, social and cultural landscapes of Eastern and Central Europe, considering how state and non-state actors are engaged in these transformations presents a useful lens for collaborative, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research. From events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the USSR to the expansion of the European Union, the migration crisis and the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the emergence of new dimensions of state and non-state power and agency calls for new forms of scholarly inquiry and poses new questions for scholars conducting research in and on the region. The renewed global interest in Eastern and Central Europe may, we hope, prompt a productive re-examination of the relationship between states, organisations and individuals and the role they play in shaping the past, present and future of Central and Eastern Europe.
We invite proposals for individual papers or panels of three to four papers, which address the IARCEES conference theme for 2019, “State and Non-state Actors in Eastern and Central Europe: Past, Present and Futureâ€. The main aim of the conference is to contribute to the growth of the field by opening up new avenues of research and encouraging further academic collaboration. The conference hopes to provide a forum where both established academics and young scholars would have the opportunity to present the results of their research. While all paper proposals will be considered, the organisers would like to encourage applicants to address one—or more—of the particular themes listed below:Â
Past, present and future forms of statehood in Central and Eastern Europe and their alternatives
Scholars from all disciplines and at all career stages are eligible to apply. The organisers are committed to ensuring the interdisciplinary nature of the conference and every attempt will be made to maintain a balanced representation of different disciplines. We especially encourage submissions from advanced postgraduate students and early-career scholars. IARCEES strives to provide a forum for scholars of Russian, Central and East European Studies in Ireland and abroad.
IARCEES members and academics from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe are particularly welcome to submit their work. A special section will be dedicated to showcasing the work of the current IARCEES members, especially those based in Ireland even if it falls outside the thematic focus.
It is envisaged that a selection of the best papers will be published, either as an edited volume, and/or in a thematic issue of Irish Slavonic Studies, the EBSCO-indexed journal of the IARCEES. Individual paper proposals should be limited to 300 words. Panel proposals should include a panel rationale of up to 300 words and short panel paper abstracts of up to 200 words. If you are proposing a full panel (three to four papers), please suggest a chair/discussant. Round tables and book panel proposals should follow the same structure, with a moderator instead of a discussant.
The deadline for the submission of all proposals is 19 December 2018. Detailed information about conference registration and schedule will be provided to participants upon acceptance. Please submit your paper or panel proposals together with a biographical statement of up to 100 words for each presenter, via this Google Form. All proposal submissions are due by 19 December 2018, 23:59 GMT.Â
