Victoria University of Wellington announced the availability of the 2019 Shafi Family Scholarship. The Shafi Family Scholarship was established to assist and encourage students, preferably from developing countries who are undertaking a PhD in Engineering. Its purpose is to recognise and assist in meeting their education costs. The scholarship is a contribution to tuition fees only. This scholarship will be awarded for one year tenure.

Scholarship Amount:

The amount of the Shafi Family Scholarship is $5,000 and it will be awarded toward the student's tuition fees. Fees will be paid directly by the Scholarships Office into the student's fees account.

Eligibility:

The scholarship is open to students who have completed at least 2.5 years of their PhD studies but require more time to complete their thesis. Previous scholarship holders will be considered. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of an assessment of the student's ability to complete the thesis within the specified timeframe. First preference will be given to students from developing countries followed by those that can demonstrate clear financial hardship which could impact their ability to complete their studies.

Regulations and conditions:

  • Victoria University Foundation will expect recipients to write a letter of thanks to the donor on receipt of the award.
  • A completed online application and any required supporting documentation (including references) must be submitted by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  • The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  • Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  • Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  • At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
