The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) offers medical researchers from all around the world the ability to conduct, manage and lead an independent project at a Swiss higher education institution, by providing the Ambizione grants for 2019. The grants are awarded for a maximum of four years.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. The scheme supports young researchers both from Switzerland and abroad. Scientists holding non-professorial academic positions at higher education institutions are also eligible to submit an application.
  2. Applicants must hold a Doctorate (PhD) or have completed their medical studies (Staatsexamen or equivalent exam).
  3. Applications may be submitted no later than four years after completing the doctorate (PhD). The date of the examination, respectively the defense of the doctoral thesis is the relevant date.
  4. Applicants who have completed their medical exam and have done clinical work for at least three years after completing their studies (specialist certification by the FMH is an advantage) may submit an application no later than 9 years after completion of the medical exam.
  5. Research activities of at least 12 months after the doctorate (PhD), respectively after the medical license undertaken at an institution different from the one(s) where the doctorate or the medical degree was conducted.
  6. The career funding schemes are open to all disciplines and topics (exception: Doc.CH). They are primarily geared at people and make contributions towards living costs (with the exception of Ambizione project grants and SNSF Eccellenza Grants) as well as towards project costs to a lesser or greater degree.
  7. Applications may be submitted by young researchers working in Switzerland or researchers who have entertained links with a Swiss research or education institution for several years. An exception to this rule is Ambizione and PRIMA, for which also foreign researchers without links to Switzerland can apply, provided that a Swiss research institution is willing to act as their host.
  8. Applicants are obliged to cooperate at all times during the application procedure. In particular, they must at all times: a. respond to queries and provide information; b. cooperate in clarifying facts and c. inform the SNSF without delay of any circumstances that are relevant to the assessment of the proposal, but were unknown or non-existent when the proposal was submitted.

Funding:

An Ambizione grant covers the grantee's salary and the funds needed to carry out the project, as you need to specify your budget in the application form.
