As part of its programme to provide postdoctoral research opportunities for scholars of proven academic excellence, University College Dublin is pleased to announce the Microsoft Newman Fellowship in Digital Policy. This Newman Fellowship is established with the generous support of Microsoft Ireland. The Newman Fellow will be based in the School of Information and Communication Studies. The research covers a wide range of topics from human-computer interaction to data studies, digital media and digital curation to information governance and ethics, generating significant international and interdisciplinary collaboration and funding.

This project is seeking a postdoctoral fellow with experience and expertise in digital policy and/or related areas. The project revolves around the following question: How do we begin thinking about developing an approach to digital policy that refuses the bipolarity between stringent regulation that stifles innovation and a free-for-all that affords few if any protections to end users? To this end, the project will advance the development of the field of digital policy in Europe and in Ireland by developing a three-pronged approach: mapping the terrain, identifying omissions and priorities, and suggesting approaches.

Applications are invited from candidates who hold a doctoral degree in Information Studies, Law, Political Science, or other relevant disciplines and have experience in associated research methodology and policy analysis. The successful applicant will have published in high impact journals and/or conferences (commensurate with their level of research experience) and will document interest in some aspect of digital policy. Candidates must possess a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant discipline and be able to demonstrate a track record in their career too. We are especially encouraging researchers with a specific focus on climate change, or gender, race, ethnicity, and/or migration in the context of digital policy to apply. Interest/experience in coordinating or organising symposia/speaker series, academic social media, working paper series, and similar outreach events desirable.

The Newman Fellowship comes with a generous tax-free stipend of €35k p.a. and is tenable for two years. Fellows must register as a fulltime student for the duration of the Fellowship term to avail of the tax-free bursary.
