The World of WearableArt (WOW) Awards Competition is an internationally renowned wearable art competition that, each year, attracts entries from over 40 countries around the world. The Awards Competition is an opportunity for designers to create the unimaginable, to challenge the conventional, and defy creative expectations. For three weeks every year, the finalist garments in the Competition are showcased in a spectacular show that takes over New Zealand’s vibrant capital city of Wellington in an explosion of creativity.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to designers from all over the world. Entrants must be 18 years or over as at 30 March 2020.

To enter as a design team, each member of the team needs to register as an individual designer. Then the team elects one team member to be the lead designer. The lead designer will complete the online entry process and be the main contact for the design team. The lead designer will need to know the designer numbers of their team members in order to complete the online entry process.

Requirements:

  • Garment Height & Width Restrictions:  When worn by a model, the garment must be easily able to enter and exit the stage via a 1.5m wide, 12-degree ramp. The garment must not be more than 3 meters in height or length.
  • Photograph Format Requirements: File Format: JPG, tiff, PNG, BMP only. File Size: 1.5MB maximum.

Note: The online entry form cannot accept PDFs, .rar, .zip or other formats.

  • Video Format Requirements:

File Format: MP4 or MOV only

File Size: 25MB maximum.

Video Duration: 15 seconds maximum.

Prizes:

The 2020 World of WearableArt Awards offers NZD187,500 in prize money.

At the World of WearableArt Awards Ceremony, 34 Awards, including the coveted Supreme WOW Award, are awarded to finalist designers each year.

Selection Criteria:

  • Originality and Innovation: The judges are looking for a garment that will surprise them and demonstrates design from a fresh perspective that they haven’t seen before. The judges are looking for an exploration of an idea/concept and uniqueness of materials and design.
  • Concept: Does the garment meet the brief for the section it has been entered into? The garment must be a complete concept and clearly portray the designer’s interpretation of the section theme.
  • Quality of Construction: A high standard of workmanship is essential. The garment finish should be immaculate, inside and out. The garment should look as good up close, as it does from a distance. Garments may be worn multiple times and need to accommodate easy movement as well as being strong enough to cope with choreography.
  • Health and Safety: Judges will consider whether a garment is safe for a model to wear and perform in. Models must be able to see clearly and breathe easily whilst onstage under stage lighting. Garment weight must be evenly distributed so the garment is comfortable to perform in. All footwear must be robust, well-balanced and safe for a model to wear.
  • Performance Potential: Judges will consider how a garment will look on stage with choreography and lighting.
