The Japan Neuroscience Society (JNS) invites researchers around the world to participate in the Joseph Altman Competition in Development Neuroscience. This award was created in honor of Dr. Joseph Altman, who discovered neurogenesis in the adult mammalian brain and received the International Prize for Biology from His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.

Scope of the Award: 

Research in developmental neuroscience at the tissue and cellular levels. The scope of the Award is not limited to phenomena during fetal or developmental stages; it also includes adult neurogenesis and its biological significance and its changes resulting from aging and diseases.

Eligibility Criteria:

Participation is not limited to members of the Japan Neuroscience Association. Researchers all over the world who have received their doctorate or comparable academic degree less than 20 years prior to the application submission deadline can apply to participate in this competition.

Prize Value:

10,000 USD (Fixed total amount if the Award is granted to two or more recipients.)

Selection Criteria:

Three articles must be sent. The first article is published within five years of the application deadline. As for the remaining two, there are no limitations of the published year.

Note: Only original articles are evaluated, and review papers should not be included.

Award Ceremony: 

The Award recipient will be recognized and presented with the prize money at the meeting of the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Neuroscience Society which will be held in Kobe, Japan on July 29 – August 1st, 2020. The winner is obliged to give a lecture during this meeting.

Note: Economy-class tickets and an accommodation fee will be provided for the recipient if he/she is an overseas researcher and will fly to Japan.

The Japan Neuroscience Society (JNS) is an academic organization of scientists who study the brain and nervous system and wish to publish their findings in order to promote the welfare and culture of humans. The Society holds annual scientific meetings to provide a forum in which society members can present their findings, exchange information and establish new collaborations. The Society also publishes an international academic journal, Neuroscience Research, to report their findings to neuroscientists worldwide.
