The SOAS University of London in the UK announced the Patricia Toye MA History Scholarship 2020. The purpose of the Fund is to promote archival research relating to the history of the Middle East and Africa, with a preference for projects on the historical origins of contemporary disputes. It is financed by contributions made in the memory of Patricia Louise Toye. As a historian, Patricia Toye became highly respected as a specialist in archival sources documenting historical aspects of political and territorial (especially border-related) problems of the contemporary Middle East and Africa. In considering applications, preference will be given to projects that use archival research to bring new insight to contemporary issues in the regions concerned, but the award will be made to the strongest candidate in the year of application.

Scholarship Amount:

The scholarship will cover the cost of fees at the Home/EU rate (£10,170 in 2020/2021) on the MA History program. However, the fund is open to all student applicants (Home/EU and Overseas) on the MA History and MA History and Intensive Language.

Eligible Programmes:

  • Full-time: MA History
  • Full-time: MA History and Intensive Language
  • Part-time programs are not eligible.
  • New applicants only (new admissions, starting in September 2020)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to Home/EU and Overseas applicants. The scholarship only covers the Home/EU fees so Overseas students will need to fund the difference in fees.
  • Applicants must hold an offer to pursue one of the eligible degree programs at SOAS by the scholarship deadline.
  • Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2020. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible. Please note that most scholarships do not cover funding or even allow for Pre-sessionals. Please check the working of your scholarship offer to see if you are eligible for a Pre-sessional course or whether you need to achieve SOAS direct entry scores by the deadline specified in your scholarship terms and conditions.
  • Applicants will need to undertake a dissertation project that uses archival research to promote archival research relating to the history of the Middle East and Africa, with a preference for projects on the historical origins of contemporary disputes.
  • In considering applications, preference will be given to projects that use archival research to bring new insight to contemporary issues in the regions concerned, but the award will be made to the strongest candidate in the year of application.
  • Applicants will be required to provide a statement with an outline of their dissertation project that outlines the main research questions of the project and gives details of the archives they propose to use. This statement should not exceed more than 1000 words (including bibliography).
