Funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), The Thomson Reuters Foundation is holding a workshop for journalists from all over the world, aimed at enabling them to write stories on rural development issues in order to ensure recognition of the daily issues faced by the rural poor and their communities.

The workshop will be held in Rome, Italy, from 10 to 13 February 2020. journalists who will attend will have the opportunity to meet with leading experts and high-profile delegates on these issues including IFAD and UN technical experts, as well as a number of smallholder farmers who will be invited.

In addition, journalists will attend IFAD's event on innovative approaches to inclusive financing for rural transformation.

The 2030 Global Agenda requires the development of innovative approaches to incentivizing sustainable and inclusive investments. Such approaches are about aligning private and public investors around shared sustainable development objectives and mobilizing diverse sources of development finance, channeling it towards rural investors, including smallholder farmers and rural small and medium enterprises (SMEs). All participating journalists are expected to pursue stories along with these issues in their home countries after the workshop.

The foundation believes accurate, impartial and independent journalism leads to better-informed societies. It holds power to account, strengthens the rule of law and contributes to the economic and social development.
