The UNDP offers a volunteer opportunity as a National Emergency Nurse in Yemen. The Emergency Nurse performs the functions under the immediate supervision of the UN Medical Physician with regards to technical matters only and the overall supervision of the UNDP Resident Representative for all administrative matters.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Attend the UN Clinic on a full-time basis.
  2. Assist the Emergency Doctor in the performance of his/her duties.
  3. Responds to emergency calls during outside office hours when necessary and assists Medical Doctors in providing adequate care.
  4. Give first-aid and advice to the staff and their recognized dependents.
  5. Ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate.
  6. Documents case findings.
  7. Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as ECG, x-rays, laboratory (blood and urine), and other tests as required.
  8. Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic.
  9. Facilitates referral to the UN Medical Doctor or to an outside physician, as required.
  10. Coordinates medical evacuation and cooperates with the Medical Services Division in N.Y. and the receiving facilities in home countries.
  11. Assists in providing medical support during evacuation and repatriation.
  12. Advises evacuees on the requirements for evacuation and/or escorts patients if needed.
  13. Concludes or closes medical evacuation files to enable staff members to submit claims.
  14. Assist in arrangements for the deceased.
  15. Perform medical briefing for incoming staff and conduct first aid training.
  16. Administer minor “outpatient” treatment and immunization requirements.
  17. Assists in maintaining records of patients' medical data including consultations and treatment.
  18. Maintain strict confidentiality with regards to patient’s medical records; patient management and treatment.
  19. Perform medication, injection, dressing, stitching, foreign body extraction and so on as needed.
  20. Maintain the UN Clinic in good order and keep the inventory of medical supplies and equipment up-to-date and be prepared for disaster.
  21. In consultation with the UN medical physician, maintain a 24-hour roster of available specialists for referral and treatment.
  22. Coordinate and supervise the work of other UN Clinic personnel i.e. Ambulance Driver and Cleaner.
  23. Check equipment and supplies on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis and maintain them in working order.
  24. Ensures that medical instruments are properly sterilized and maintains hygiene and cleanliness.
  25. Performs other related duties.

Requirements:

  1. Registered Professional Nurse and a first-level degree from an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Program (University) or equivalent such as an accredited Diploma Program (3 years).
  2. Certificates in ECG, CPR or Basic Life Support and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care is an asset.
  3. National registration and license are a requirement.
  4. 48 months of experience in nursing and midwifery.
  5. Fluent in the English language.

  7. Only nationals of Yemen and legal residents in Yemen with the status of refugees or with the status of being stateless are eligible to apply.

Funding:

Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
