The United Nations is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to support the development of an online educational game for peacekeepers for 2020. This online game should serve as a learning reinforcement tool that allows peacekeepers to 'play' with what they learned during their pre-deployment training. The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is a training arm of the UN system with a mandate related to building capacities for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through outcome-based training and learning initiatives. The Division for Peace strives to support the (re-)establishment of peaceful, just and inclusive societies by enabling individuals, institutions and organizations to contribute meaningfully to sustainable peace. UNITAR delivers pre-deployment training to thousands of peacekeepers in a variety of African countries and it continuously strives to integrate new technologies into the training. At the moment, it aims to strengthen the learning reinforcement tools and want to explore the opportunities of an online game.

Responsibilities:

The volunteer will search for available applications, select those that meet UNITAR's criteria and the needs of peacekeepers and support us in transforming this application into an effective UNITAR game. As we want to develop a game that is attractive and useful for peacekeepers, the volunteer will be involved in a needs assessment and the testing phase. The whole development of the game will be done with a human-centered design approach. The volunteers will receive guidance and support over the course of the collaboration.

Requirements:

  1. Volunteers need to work 11-20 hours per week, for 8 weeks.
  2. Previous work experience that involved the development of (online) games.
  3. Technical expertise in designing and developing applications.
  4. A creative and innovative thinker, solution seeker.
  5. Good knowledge of English.

Desirable:

  1. Experience with human-centered design.
  2. Military background or substantive experience with armed forces.
  3. Experience in a peacekeeping operation.
