The United Nations is offering an internship opportunity within the Environment Programme (UN Environment), to work on Environment Affairs specifically Climate Change. This program is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Duration and Working Hours:

The duration of the Internship is for six months for all three areas of action. The Internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Climate Change Unit.

Qualified Applicants:

  1. Be enrolled in a master's program; or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Environmental policy, climate change, natural resource management, development, energy efficiency and/or related field of studies preferred.
  2. Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  3. Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  5. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the program.
  6. Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Spanish are required, since work will require research and communication, including reading and interviews, in both languages. Working knowledge of French or other UN official languages is desirable.
  7. Possesses the following skills:
  • Communication.
  • Teamwork.
  • Client Orientation.

Duties:

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. The intern will support the following activities:

  1. Research and analysis of the status of climate change policies and strategies, requiring desktop research, communications with project partners and communications with relevant ministries. 
  2. Development of analysis, briefings, and presentations for regional and national workshops and seminars on adaptation to climate change. When required, the intern will also support the general organization of events, including sending invitations to participants/speakers, developing agendas, and printing of materials.
  3. Support partnership building with adaptation to climate change stockholders, including international agencies; national governments; and environmental organizations. The intern will support the development of presentations for meetings with prospective partners and the development of project proposals.
  4. Support the development of communications including that of electronic newsletters while also managing a contact database for countries interested in developing new climate change initiatives.
  5. Support the development, revision, and implementation of Climate Change Mitigation projects/programs in the region.
  6. Support the development, revision, and implementation of Climate Transparency projects/programs in the region including the CBIT projects ICAT projects, among others.

  4. An explanation of why he/she is the best candidate for this specific internship.
  5. Explanation of his/her interest in the United Nations Internship Program, ensure to include all past work experience (if any).
