The United Nations is offering internship opportunity within program management at United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction UNISDR, that will take place in Austria, United States, Kenya, Ethiopia, Panama, Egypt, Thailand, Fiji, South Korea, Japan, Belgium, and Germany.

Duration and Working Days:

The internship is for a period of two to six months depending on the needs of each office. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
  2. Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  3. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  5. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the program.
  6. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  7. Possesses the following skills:
  • Communication.
  • Teamwork.
  • Client Orientation.

Duties:

Responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, etc.
  2. Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.
  3. Support organization of meetings and conferences, for example, the 2019 Global Platform.
  4. Assist data collection of disaster risk reduction practices.
  5. Conduct research and provide analysis of relevant disaster risk reduction and sustainable development issues.
  6. Support research on risk knowledge.
  7. Assist in maintaining databases.
  8. Support the review of key publications.
  9. Assist in preparing training and learning events and other capacity-building initiatives for Disaster Risk Reduction.

  1. Preferred duty station(s) for the internship.
  2. Title of degree currently pursuing.
  3. Graduation Date (When will the applicant be graduating/ have graduated from the program).
  4. IT skills and programs the applicant is proficient in. 
  5. Top three areas of interest.
  6. An explanation why he/she is the best candidate for this specific internship.
  7. Explanation of his/her interest in the United Nations Internship Program. 

Online Personal History Profile must include:

  1. All past work experiences.
  2. IT skills.
  3. Three references.
