The United Nations is offering an internship opportunity at The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The internship may be available in either New York or Geneva, with either the HR Business Partnering and Management Team or the HR Policy and Strategy Team, depending on the needs of OCHA and the preference of the selected candidate.

Duration and Working Hours:

Selected interns will be expected to serve for a minimum period of two months, with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of OCHA and the availability of the selected candidate.  The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns will work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  2. Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  3. Have an interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  5. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  6. Possessing the following skills:
  • Professionalism.
  • Communication.
  • Teamwork.

Duties:

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

As for HR Business Partnering and Management Team (Geneva and New York), interns will be assigned:

  1. Providing assistance to the provision of effective HR administrative services.
  2. Supporting the maintenance and analysis of HR data.
  3. Assisting with recruitment processes.
  4. Facilitating HR-related projects.
  5. Other relevant tasks as required by the supervisor.

As for HR Policy and Strategy Team (New York only), interns will be assigned:

  1. Assisting with drafting and preparation of emails and official documents.
  2. Drafting, editing and reviewing HR policy and/or HR-related documents.
  3. Providing administrative support for meetings, conferences, and events for the HR section.
  4. Conducting online research on various HR policy and strategy-related issues.
  5. Assisting with the implementation of HR policy and strategy-related activities.
  6. Other relevant tasks as required by the supervisor.

Required Documents:

The Cover Note must include: 

  1. Applicant's availability (dates) for the internship.
  2. Applicant's preference for the Internship to be undertaken in the HR Business Partnering and Management Team (either Geneva or New York) or the HR Policy and Strategy Team (New York only).
  3. Degree Program (What is the applicant currently studying or have recently graduated from?)
  4. Graduation Date (When will the applicant graduate or when did he/she graduate from the program and field of study?)
  5. IT skills and programs the applicant is proficient in. 

Online Personal History Profile must include:

  1. All past work experiences.
  2. Three references.
