Description

The International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science (IMPRS-CS) is a graduate program jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, and the Computer Science Department at Saarland University. The MPI-INF and the MPI-SWS are among the more than 80 institutes run by the Max Planck Society. The MPIs are Germany’s prime basic research facilities with world-class, basic research in the fields of medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, technology, and the humanities. Since 1948, MPI researchers have been awarded 18 Nobel prizes, which testifies to the quality and innovation of MPI research programs.

Eligibility

A successful candidate must:

  • A Bachelor’s and Master’s certificate (if available);
  • School leaving certificate;
  • Academic transcripts from Bachelor and Master study;
  • A resume;
  • Three names and email addresses of professors or similar willing to give reference for the candidate (Please note that only official, as opposed to private, e-mail addresses will be accepted);
  • A personal statement explaining the candidate’s motivation and reasons for pursuing a PhD in computer science at the International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science, whereby the candidate may state his/her preferred supervisor or research group;
  • Submission of TOEFL scores, TSE scores or the Cambridge Certificate is strongly encouraged but not compulsory;
  • Submission of GRE general and GRE Computer Science subject test scores is strongly encouraged but not compulsory;
  • An abstract of your Master’s thesis.

Scholarship

  • The IMPRS for Brain and Behaviour will provide financial support for the duration of your studies. Up to 15 positions will be funded depending on the qualifications of the candidates;
  • PhD position is funded for the duration of three years with the possibility for an extension if warranted.

How to Apply


A successful candidate must:

  • Hold or be about to receive a Master’s degree in Computer Science (or an equivalent degree) from a research-oriented institution of higher education;

  • Have outstanding academic performance (rank at or near top of class);
  • Have excellent oral and written English language skills;
  • Show aptitude for independent, creative work;
  • Have performed research and published (or submitted for publication) the results.
