The United Nations offers an internship opportunity within the Governance, State-building Section, Emerging and Conflict-Related Issues Division (ECRI) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut for a period of two months, on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member for 35 hours over five days a week and reports directly to the Chief, Democratic Transition and State-building Section and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of ECRI.

Note: The Intern is responsible for all expenses related to the internship. ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

Key Responsibilities:

The intern will be responsible for carrying out, but not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Conducts research and reference searches on issues relating to ECRI’s areas of work;
  • Assists in compiling, processing and working with Governance databases derived from a variety of sources;
  • Assists in the construction of Governance and reform indicators;
  • Surveys and prepares reports on the reform policies undertaken by countries afflicted by political transition and/or conflict;
  • Assists in preparing charts and tables and drafting content for inclusion in the outputs of the Division;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications, in particular, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
