The United Nations offers an internship opportunity in the Strategy, Planning, Accountability, Results and knowledge Section (Spark) of the Office of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut. The intern will work in assisting the team in many tasks, including the analysis of the effectiveness and efficiency of activities in order to improve the overall performance of the office (ESCWA). The mandate of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development among its member States.

The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member for 35 hours over five days a week and reports directly to the Coordinator of the SPARK Section.

Note: The Intern is responsible for all expenses related to the internship. ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

Key Responsibilities:

The intern will undertake the following assignments during the period of his/her internship:

  • Carry out research, analysis, and drafting of documents, and present data and information to support the implementation of activities, including the preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Contribute to the development of monitoring tools.
  • Organize, consolidate and analyze data and information derived from quality assurance processes and tools using appropriate statistical methods and/or applications.
  • Contribute to the design and development of training for staff in assessment tools and participate in the implementation of training activities of the Unit.
  • Attend meetings (i.e. Publications Committee, expert group meetings) and supports in note-taking.
  • Assist in other ad-hoc activities as instructed.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications, in particular, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.

  • Technological Awareness – Keeps abreast of available technology; - understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; - actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows a willingness to learn new technology.
