The United Nations offers an internship opportunity in the Economic Affairs Division of the Office of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut. This internship is located within the Conflict, Occupation and Development Section, Emerging and Conflict-Related Issues Division (ECRI) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The intern reports directly to the Chief, Conflict, Occupation and Development Section and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of ECRI. The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.

Note: The Intern is responsible for all expenses related to the internship. ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

Key Responsibilities:

The intern will be responsible for carrying out, but not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Provide assistance for quantitative and qualitative background research for ECRI documents; reports, working and technical papers;
  • Compile, process and work with socioeconomic databases in countries in conflict, crisis, and transition;
  • Document and conduct legal and internet research on Least Developed Countries through the identification of data sources and preparation of data sets;
  • Draft analytical summaries of intergovernmental discussions;
  • Research assigned issues on governance and institutional development;
  • Gather information and identify and explore opportunities to support ECRI to advance its agenda through analytical work;
  • Assist in documentation and preparation of expert group meetings and other events of the division;
  • Undertake any other assignment requested by the Division Director and Section Chief.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications, in particular, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
