World Food Program WFP is offering an internship opportunity, as it is currently seeking to fill for candidates to participate in the PD Summer Internship Program 2020 in the Policy and Program Department (PD). The position will be based in the Communications Unit in Kigali, Rwanda. 

Duration:

The internship will be typically for a period of at least 3 months from May/June to August/ September 2020. 

Required Qualifications:

  1. Currently enrolled in a master’s degree OR a recent graduate of a master’s degree (graduated within the last 6 months).
  2. Excellent English verbal and writing skills. WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  3. Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  4. Strong interest in communications, photography, and developing targeted social media content.
  5. Culturally sensitive and enjoys working in a new context with people of different cultures.
  6. Willingness to travel regularly to field locations throughout the country.
  7. Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.

Internship Duties:

Under the direct supervision of Head of the Unit, the PD Summer Intern will perform the following duties:

  1. Contribute towards the development of ongoing projects, plans, and processes by liaising with internal counterparts to ensure effective collaboration to gather information, write human interest stories and develop photo essays based on WFP operations in Rwanda to be published on WFP’s external communications platform, Medium.
  2. Under guidance, prepare communication content for use on traditional and social media platforms and networks, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
  3. Support the identification, development, and management of potential partnerships to collaborative working leading to improved communications and development programs.
  4. Support preparations for external field missions and join (as applicable) to gather communication.
  5. for visibility purposes: Attend and draft meeting minutes for pertinent meetings such as with the One UN communication group.
  6. Perform any other duties as required.

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should have:

  1. Very good knowledge of reporting and communications on WFP’s operations on Rwanda.
  2. Very good understanding of how externally published human interest stories and photo essays are developed.
  3. Communication skills to create content for use on traditional and social media platforms and networks.
  4. General understanding of WFP overall operations.

Benefits Offered:

  1. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Communications Unit, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews, as well as learning and development discussions, will be an elemental part of the supervision.
  2. Throughout their assignment, WFP interns have access to an industry-leading learning platform, WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.
  3. The PD intern will be paid a monthly stipend of approximately USD US$ 570 per month as a contribution to basic subsistence costs.
  4. WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas, and related costs.
  5. WFP will reimburse travel tickets for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
