United Nation announces a Job opportunity as a legal assistant which are primarily located in the office of legal affairs and the United Nations compensation commission but may also be found in other offices throughout the United Nations secretariat. 

Eligibility:

You must:

  1. Have knowledge of the organizational legal framework, relevant legal processes, procedures and terminology for review, examination, preparation and processing of legal documents.
  2. Have the ability to conduct research using diverse legal research sources including electronic sources on the internet and other databases.
  3. Have the ability to review and synthesizes information and present findings and recommendations in a required format.
  4. Have knowledge of information management, classification, and retrieval systems.
  5. Have the ability to show tact and discretion in dealing with high-ranking officials and with confidential matters and materials.
  6. Observe deadlines and achieving results, motivated by professional rather than personal concerns, shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges and remains calm in stressful situations.
  7. Speaks and writes clearly and effectively, Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately.
  8. Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication.
  9. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
  10. Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies.
  11. Identifies priority activities and assignments and adjusts priorities as required.
  12. Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work.
  13. Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  14. Have a minimum of seven years of experience in paralegal work, conference servicing, general office support, research, library work or related area which is required.
  15. Have experience working in the UN legal field or other similar large international organization is desirable.
  16. Be fluent in English. 
  17. Have knowledge of French is desirable and knowledge of another official language of the UN is an advantage.

Your Responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the chief, the incumbent will provide case management and legal research and related support to OSLA legal officers in New York as well as field offices in Geneva, Beirut, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi, and in close cooperation with other colleagues, duties will include:

  • Case management through the use of a database, email and archived material.
  • Conduct research using existing files and alternative sources.
  • Draft responses to official and routine correspondence, notes, and any other communications for review by legal officers.
  • Handle, as appropriate, a variety of relatively complex verbal and written inquiries from internal and external parties, including providing information on the internal justice processes and OSLA's role and procedures.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of a body of legal reference files.
  • Generate a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases for inclusion in reports to the general assembly and periodic reports on activities of OSLA and the office of administration of justice.
  • Assist in the archiving of documents and materials and ensuring high-quality case management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
