The United Nations Volunteers Program is offering a volunteer opportunity in translation from English to Somali with 28 Too Many charity.

About 28 Too Many:

28 Too Many is a values-based charity working to end female genital mutilation (FGM). Its primary focus is on research and enabling local initiatives to end FGM in the 28 African countries where it is practiced and in other countries across the world where members of those communities have migrated. The charity provides knowledge, tools, best practice models and support networks that help anti-FGM campaigners and organizations working with communities to bring about sustainable change to end FGM. It also networks and advocates for the global eradication of FGM, working closely with other charities and organizations in the violence against women sector and participating in global campaigns, such as the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. 28 Too many won the 2018 Collaboration Award from the Thomson Reuters Foundation for our series of Law reports.

Main Tasks:

Translate or proofread a 10-page long document, mapping the legal framework and status of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) in SOMALIA. This includes extracts and analysis of constitutional protections, international treaties and national legislation that give protection to women&girls at risk of FGM. The use of legal terms, as well as FGM relevant terms, is thus omnipresent. One volunteer will be assigned the translation and the other one the proof-reading. Referring back to the original legal texts (specified in the end-notes) for the exact wording will be of great importance. An in-house online glossary of terms will also need to be completed to match the lexical complexity of the charity reports (notably the legal terms for this particular report). Coordination will be managed by 28 Too Many, direct communication will take place via email. Volunteers will be given due credit on the final product.

Requirements:

  • Somali proficiency at native-speaker level, fluent in English.
  • Work or studies in the legal field is essential, preferably in Human Rights.
  • Experience in translation from English to Somali is essential and in at least one of the following areas of expertise is preferred: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and/or Women’s Health and/or Gender. Please give details of previous work with your application.
  • Applicants may be asked to translate a short paragraph as part of the selection process.
