Internship Opportunity in Political Affairs from the United Nations in Switzerland 2021

The United Nation announces an internship at the United Nations Office for disarmament affairs, Geneva branch is for at least two months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department. Successful applicants could work in one or more of several different areas which fall under the branch's activities like the conference on disarmament, the Anti-Personnel Landmine Convention (APLC), the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW). The internship duration cannot exceed six months and its unpaid and full-time. Interns will work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

You must:

  1. Speaks and writes clearly and effectively.

  8. Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies.
  9. Identifies priority activities and assignments and adjusts priorities as required.
  10. Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work.
  11. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning.
  12. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary.
  13. Considers all those to whom services are provided to be "clients " and seeks to see things from clients' point of view.
  14. Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect.
  15. Identifies clients' needs and matches them to appropriate solutions.
  16. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations, especially in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation, and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the charter.
  17. Be fluent in spoken and written English which is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
  18. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  19. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients' environment to keep informed and anticipate problems.
  20. You don't have to have professional work experience. However, the field of study should be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for is required. 
  21. To qualify for an internship with the United Nations internship program, Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: 
  22. Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); OR 
  23. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); OR 
  24. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. 
  25. Applicants who are unable to commence the internship within one year of graduation shall not be accepted.

Your Responsibilities:

The interns will be responsible for:

  • Provide assistance in drafting and preparing official documents, press releases, and statements.
  • Provide assistance in maintaining records and data sets.
  • Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.
  • Conduct research, including document, legal and internet searches.
  • Provide assistance during conferences.
  • Work on web presentations and social media presence.
  • Fulfill other duties as required.
