Michelin global initiative has announced the opening of submissions for its annual design competition entitled "UPCYCLE". Michelin aims to establish a closer relationship with the design community, combining technical innovation with transportation design to create vehicles or systems that consumers want to use, buy and enjoy.

2020 Michelin Challenge Design Theme:

The theme is UPCYCLE, meaning to reuse or repurpose in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. The world is pursuing a circular economy that does more with less by using fewer resources and raw materials in the production of solutions for the societal, environmental and economic challenges of our time.

Your design story should visually communicate how your second-life use will provide a greater value than the original design. Your entry should answer these questions:

  • Who is your intended user?
  • What is the challenge that your repurposed design addresses?
  • Why did you choose your donor entry or entries?
  • How does your UPCYCLE design create enhanced societal, environmental, or economic value?

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Anyone interested in future mobility is eligible to enter. Entries include individuals and teams of transportation and mobility designers, including students, teachers, artists, architects, engineers, and futurists, etc.
  • Michelin Challenge Design is open to residents of any country. Parents or legal guardians of entrants less than the age of majority in their state, province, or country must sign the MCD Entry Form. Michelin Challenge Design is void where prohibited by law.
  • Employees of Michelin, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, distributors, suppliers, agents, representatives, advertising, promotional or judging agencies, authorized Michelin tire dealers and distributors, and their immediate family members and those living in the same household, or anyone working on this project, are not eligible to participate.
  • By participating, you agree to be bound by the Rules and Procedures of this challenge and by the decisions of the Michelin Challenge Design Jury and of Michelin, whose decisions shall be final and binding in all respects.
  • Any entries or displays may be withdrawn or declined for any reason at any time.
  • Entrants must include all data and information and fulfill all requirements as required by the Michelin Challenge Design Rules and Procedures and Entry Form in order for the entry to be valid.
  • If more than one person designed an entry, all designer names must appear on the “Designer(s) Name(s)” portion of the Michelin Challenge Design Entry Form.
  • Student designers who are working with an engineering department at a university are required to take the lead role in the development of any submitted work. This means that the designer has the final say to all technical questions that will have an impact on the functional and aesthetic result of the design work.

Prizes:

Three winners are invited as guests of Michelin to the Movin’On Summit, a premier global summit on sustainable mobility. The 2020 Summit will be held in Montreal, June 3–5, 2020. At Movin’On, the winning works are displayed, and the winners are recognized at a special Michelin Challenge Design reception and participate in a review of their design portfolios by members of the jury and leading international designers or experts.

Evaluations Criteria:

The Michelin Challenge Design Jury will be evaluating entries based on the following:

  • Relevance to the theme.
  • Concept originality.
  • Design value and quality.
  • Developmental potential.
  • Design display ability.

The final evaluation will take place in April 2020, and those chosen to display will be notified shortly thereafter.
