United Nations offers an internship opportunity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, within Economic Commission for Africa. Selected candidate will specifically work in The Urbanization & Development Section within the Gender, Poverty & Social Policy Division (GPSPD).

Internship Duration:

Maximum duration of six months.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for an internship under the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Applications must meet one of the following educational requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  2. Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  3. Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  5. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the United Nations Internship Programme.
  6. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the United Nations Internship Programme. Knowledge of another United Nations language will be considered an asset.
  7. Possessing the following skills:
  • Professionalism.
  • Communication.
  • Teamwork.

Internship Duties:

  • The focus of this internship will be to assist the Urbanization & Development Section in its work on the economic, social and sustainable dimensions of urbanization.
  • Under the overall guidance of the Director of the Division, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Urbanization & Development Section and within delegated authority, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
  1. Assist with compiling information and undertake research on policy issues in relation to the economic, social and sustainable dimensions of urbanization, such as the linkages of urbanization and industrialization; energy; climate change; trade; gender; statistics, innovation; urban and rural linkages and; inclusive cities.
  2. Support data collection activities.
  3. Undertake desk review of bibliographies for the section's reports and peer review documents.
  4. Assist with organizing and convening meetings, including attending to all relevant preparations.
  5. Perform other duties as might be assigned by the supervisor.

Required Documents:

  3. List the IT skills and programmes applicant is proficient in;
  4. List of top three areas of interest;
  5. Explanation of why applicant thinks he/she is the best candidate for this specific internship;
  6. Reasons for applicant’s interest in the United Nations Internship Programme;

Online Personal History Profile must include:

  1. All past work experiences.
  2.  IT skills.
  3.  Three references.
