Film Freeway is looking for independent and artful animated films to share with the audience in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in the Giraf International Festival Independent Animation. The international competition accepts abstract or narrative, hand-drawn or computer-generated, student films or well-established professionals, or anywhere in between. They want films that makes them excited to see, films that are expanding what animation can do, and films that make us feel things.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Participation is free of charge.
  2. Commercial work is not allowed.
  3. The festival is also aimed at an adult audience, so they rarely select films that are explicitly aimed at children or family audiences.
  4. Music videos are admittedly a bit of a grey area--they rarely book them, but if you think yours will be the exception, feel free to submit.
  5. Only animated short and feature films created after January 1, 2018 will be accepted.

Prizes:

  1. Artists will be paid a screening fee of approximately $70CAD for the presentation of their film at GIRAF.
  2. $200CAD for each of two winners.
  3. Audience Choice Award.

About Giraf International Festival Independent Animation:

An annual animation festival that runs each November at the Globe Cinema in Calgary, GIRAF celebrates the spirit of independent, underground, and experimental animation, showcasing Canadian animators and presenting diverse animations from around the globe.

GIRAF is committed to creating greater awareness for animation as an art form, through interactive activities including workshops, artist talks, visiting artists, and animation screenings. They focus on presenting works that push boundaries through the development of new techniques, hybrid forms of creation, and challenging subject matter, and thus animation that is rarely seen at other festivals.  GIRAF is run by the Quickdraw Animation Society, a non-profit, artist-run centre in Calgary Alberta.
