United Nations announces an internship in environmental affairs. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the united nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The science division of UNEP provides timely, scientifically credible, policy-relevant environmental analyses, data and information for decision-making and action planning for sustainable development. It monitors, analyses and reports on the state of the global environment, assesses global and regional environmental trends and provides early warning of emerging environmental threats. The science division manages UNEP Live, UNEP´s shared knowledge management system that provides contextualized data, information and scientific knowledge to keep the environment under review. UNEP Live is increasingly being used to underpin a variety of assessments and features a newly developed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) portal. In addition, the unit is building partnerships in the region to support countries in sharing and reporting on environmental relevant to internationally agreed environmental goals and the universal SDGs.

  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the united nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the charter.
  • A student in economics, statistics or environmental science preferred or another relevant field.
  • Have excellent writing and communication skills in English and Spanish, since work will require research and communication, including reading and interviews, in both languages. Working knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • To qualify for an internship by the united nations headquarters internship program, you must meet one of the following requirements:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), OR 
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); OR 
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and if selected, must commence the internship within a year period of graduation.
  4. You are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the program.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
  • Under the supervision of the environment under review subprogram coordinator the intern will:
  1. General support for the development of the biennial work plan of the Subprogram Environment Under Review (EuR), keeping communication with focal points in Latin America.
  2. Ensure smooth coordination and exchange of information with national ILAC (Latin American and the Caribbean Initiative for Sustainable Development) focal points through regular communications and meetings.
  3. Receive feedback and inputs from countries regarding the current production of SDGs and ILAC indicators and critical needs in terms of data and statistics capacity.
  4. Facilitate participation of ILAC focal points in all meetings organized by UNEP related to SDG indicators where the UN environment is the custodian agency.
  5. Develop an assessment of the existing webpages/platforms currently used at the national and regional level to monitor the progress of SDG indicators.
  6. Conduct secondary data research to support the development of concept notes, proposals, policy briefs or activities.
  7. Support the preparation of communications pieces, technical briefing notes, news pieces, draft reports and publications as necessary.
  8. Support the start-up phase of any projects if required.
  9. May assist in the organization of meetings, training, and workshops.
  10. Support other activities as requested.
