Leeds University in the UK offers a cultural exchange program for bachelor's students around the world. The program is an international summer school that combines world-class education with academic field trips as well as social and cultural activities.

Program schedules: 

You can choose one of the following dates:

  • From 4 to 18 July 2020
  • Or from 19 July to 1 August 2020.

Program Activities:

Academic modules: You will choose one or two modules from a diverse range of subject areas, and earn up to 20 University of Leeds credits (equivalent to six US credits or 10 ECTS).

Field trips: Through experiential learning and field trips, you will spend lots of time outside of the classroom. You will enjoy hands-on learning that will give you insights into British culture, history, and society. Each module includes at least one field trip to support what you have learned in the classroom. Destinations include Castle Howard in York, the BBC at MediaCity UK, the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth and the cities of Manchester and Liverpool. Download our excursions, trips and socials guide.

Cultural excursions and social events:

  • Orientation activities and socials.
  • One full-day excursion per week.
  • A half-day excursion to Harewood House.
  • A farewell social.

Note: If you attend the full four-week program, the excursions will include York, Newcastle, the Yorkshire Dales, and Whitby. If you attend the two-week program, the excursions will include York and Whitby. There are social assistants who will live in the accommodation with you during summer school. The social assistants will organize low-cost or free evening and weekend social activities. They will also provide support, knowledge of the local area and a friendly face throughout the program.

Sport and wellbeing: Premium membership of sports and fitness facilities is included in the LISS program, all located on campus. Facilities include:

  • 250-station state-of-the-art fitness suite – complete with the latest Technogym equipment.
  • 25m, eight-lane swimming pool.
  • Sauna and steam room.
  • Squash courts.
  • Three studios offering over 70 classes per week.
  • Climbing wall.

Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 or equivalent.
  • Be enrolled at a university, or be a recent graduate.
  • Meet English language requirements. The program accepts the following qualifications and these are the minimum requirements for non-native English speakers of non-EU/EEA nationality:
    • IELTS 5.5 (5.5 overall with no component lower than 5.0)
    • TOEFL (iBT) 80 (80 overall, listening and reading: 18, speaking and writing: 19)
    • TOEIC (all four components are required) listening: 400, reading: 385, speaking: 160, writing: 150
  • Password Skills 5.5 (5.5 overall with no component lower than 5.0)

Note: Other equivalent language test scores may also be considered, and students with extensive English language experience may be exempt - please contact us for more details. Please note we do not accept CET-4 or CET-6.

Program fee:

  • Full 4-week program: £3,240
  • 2-week program: £1,820

Program fees include:

  • Tuition.
  • Accommodation.
  • Breakfast and lunch, Monday - Friday.
  • Module field trips.
  • Weekend excursions.
  • Social program.
  • Sports center membership.

Note: The cost of flights, insurance, and visa is not included.

When you have received your acceptance letter you will be required to pay £300 of the program fee as a non-refundable deposit to accept your offer of a place on the Leeds International Summer School. The remaining balance must be made in full by 8 May 2020 (non-refundable after this date).

Discounts available:

Early application discount: Submit your application by 1 April 2020 to receive an early discount, reducing the 4-week program fee to £3,090. The discounted early rate for students attending for two weeks is £1,745.

Group discount: For institutions that wish to send a group of 10 students or more a group discount is available. Please contact us for more details at summer@leeds.ac.uk 

Scholarships: If you have a GPA of 3.2 or above (or equivalent) then you are eligible to apply for one of 20 scholarships worth £500 to help pay for your fees. You can apply by completing the scholarship section of the summer school application form. Please note you must attend both blocks of LISS (four weeks) and you must apply by the 1 April early application deadline to be eligible to apply for the scholarship.
