The Poetry Society in collaboration with The Foyle Foundation is inviting young poets to take part in The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2020. 

Award rules:

  1. Poet must be aged 11-17 on the closing date of the 31st July 2020 (BST) in order to enter.
  2. Individuals may enter more than one poem, however it is strongly advised that poets concentrate on drafting and redrafting their poems and send only a selection of their very best. Remember, quality is more important than quantity.
  3. The competition is free to enter and poems can be of any length and on any theme.
  4. Poet's work is accepted on the basis that this will be its first publication anywhere in the world. This includes:
    • Anthologies, magazines, solo collections, school prints;
    • Online, including blogs and online magazines;
    • Social media such as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram;
    • Poems cannot have been broadcast on any regional, national or online TV station or via any radio platform.
  5. Poems cannot have won any other competition.
  6. Poems must be the original work of the author (award does run checks for plagiarism on all selected poems).
  7. Poems must be written in English, but poets can include phrases in their mother tongue or another language. If they would like to enter an entry in British Sign Language or Braille then they can contact inquires email mentioned.
  8. Poet cannot enter a poem written by more than one author. 
  9. Entries will be accepted from anywhere in the world. 
  10. Competition entries cannot be returned under any circumstances. Poets must make sure they keep a record of all poems entered and send copies only.
  11. By entering this competition, entrants agree that their poems and data may be used by The Poetry Society, including for research purposes. Occasionally The Poetry Society works with academic and cultural partners to produce academic research. By entering this competition poets are also agreeing that their anonymized data and poems can be used in such research.
  12. If poets are 11-12 your parent or guardian will need to give permission for them to enter. Permission can be given online or by sending in the parent or guardian permission form (check the link).

Prizes:

  1. All entrants will receive a certificate for participating in this prestigious competition.
  2. All 100 winning poets (top 15 and 85 commended) will be notified in September 2020 and invited to an award ceremony in October 2020. 
  3. The top 15 winners will have their poems printed in the winners’ print anthology, 25,000 copies of which are distributed to school libraries and poetry enthusiasts.
  4. The top 15 winners will be invited to attend a life-changing residential writing course at one of the prestigious Arvon Centres, or receive mentoring from a professional poet (age dependent).
  5. The 85 commended poets will have their work published in an online anthology and their names in the print anthology.
