The American University in Cairo (AUC) is offering a number of international fellowships under the Ryoichi Sasakawa Endowed Young Leaders Fellowships Fund (SYLFF). SYLFF program offers scholarships in 69 universities worldwide for outstanding graduate students in various disciplines.

Available Programs:

  • Arabic and Islamic Civilizations (specialization in Arabic Language and Literature, Middle Eastern History, Islamic Art and Architecture, and Islamic Studies).
  • Economics, Economics in International Development.
  • English and Comparative Literature.
  • Gender and Women's Studies.
  • Global Affairs.
  • International Human Rights Law.
  • International and Comparative Education.
  • Journalism and Mass Communication.
  • Middle East Studies.
  • Migration and Refugee Studies.
  • Political Science.
  • Sociology and Anthropology.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to all nationalities.
  • For new graduate degree-seeking students; satisfy AUC graduate admissions requirements.
  • Full admission into one of AUC’s MA programs in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Bachelor degree with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent.
  • For continuing students; to retain the fellowship, the recipient must maintain a GPA of 3.2 
  • History of active participation in extracurricular activities and public service.
  • Both new and continuing graduate students may apply but preference is given to those who require four semesters to complete their degree
  • Financial need.

Duration:

Two academic years and the intervening summer session, with a review every semester for satisfactory academic performance.

Program Funding:

The fellowship covers:

  • Tuition fees, for a maximum of nine credits per semester.
  • Student services and activities fees.
  • Medical service and health insurance fees (for international students).
  • May cover conference or thesis research support grants for eligible fellows.
  • Fellows are expected to participate in various activities, including the annual Sasakawa Symposium.

Fellows Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the status of a full-time student with a minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Respond to any reporting requests received from AUC by the deadline communicated. This may include a request for photos or academic progress information to be used for reporting purposes; attendance of fellowship events including any meetings/events as requested by the relevant university entities.
  • Awarded fellows will be assigned a number of hours to work with the Office of Graduate Students Services and Fellowships. 
  • Fellows are expected to apply for conference and thesis research grants, participate in internships, social service organizations, and regional and international conferences.
