Fellowships for Arab Researchers from the NATO Defense College (NDC) in Italy 2020

The NATO Defense College (NDC) offers a limited number of Research Fellowships in the field of security and strategic studies. This offer is open to scholars from all NATO countries, Partnership for Peace (PfP), NATO Mediterranean Dialogue (MD), Other Military Cooperation/Partners Across the Globe (OMC/PAG). The objective is to promote scholarly research in areas of particular interest to NATO and its member states, the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), PfP, MD, as well as OMC/PAG.

Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) Fellowship:

Two fellowships are made available each year for applicants from MD countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia. Each fellowship lasts five months and each fellow receives a stipend (€16,500) to cover his/her travel expenses and the costs of his/her stay in Rome.

Payment will be made in three installments: 

  • €8,000 in the week following the Fellow’s arrival at the College; 
  • a second payment of €5,000 after 3 months; and 
  • a third installment of €3,500 will be granted upon submission of a Research Draft, and the delivery of a presentation.

Qualifications and Conditions:

  • Candidates for the MD Fellowships must be citizens of one of the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia.
  • Candidates will be selected on the basis of their specific aptitude and experience for carrying through a major Defense or Security Research project related to NATO, its member states’ policies and/or the Partner country’s regional context. 
  • Criteria for selection include academic qualifications, the quality of the research proposal, professional experience and publication record. Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English or French and be computer literate.
  • Candidates applying to the MD Fellowships must have a distinguished research and publication record. A PhD in a relevant discipline will be an asset.
  • Candidates applying to the MD Fellowships are invited to submit proposals in the area of Mediterranean security.


Selected Fellows will be requested to conduct research within the NDC Research Division, including: 

  • writing of a Research essay based on their Research Proposal and submit a draft before the end of the Fellowship to the NDC Review Board for a possible publication in one of the NDC Series. An extension of the time limit for the draft submission will be granted only under exceptional circumstances. All rights (including title, copyright and patent rights) related to any work carried out by the Fellows in the performance of their official duties shall be vested in the NDC; 
  • contribution to the educational activities of the NDC, including mentoring NDC Courses’ work in their areas of expertise; 
  • contribution to NDC events and other research-related activities.
