IRC provides a full time job opportunity to work as a youth program coordinator in New York, NY HQ USA. The youth program coordinator is responsible for the implementation of educational support services for refugee youth and their families, and community partners (including New York City public school staff, universities, and local organizations) working with refugee youth. The youth program coordinator has primary responsibility for school enrollment support and the academic coaching program, which supports families of newly arrived children and youth to make a positive adjustment to school in NYC. You also play a leading role in the refugee youth summer academy, which provides 6 weeks of intensive orientation and preparation for success in NYC public schools and provide technical support to the IRC’s Saturday tutoring and leadership programs as needed. You will work closely with colleagues to ensure that the youth program goals and objectives are accomplished using a holistic, collaborative approach, in partnership with school staff, partner organizations, parents, and refugee youth themselves. 

Eligibility:

You must have:

  1. Master degree in social work.
  2. It's preferred to have Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) certification.
  3. A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working with children and youth, specifically in the context of educational and social programs.
  4. Experience in working with refugee and/or immigrant populations.
  5. Experience in working with the New York city public school system is highly desirable.
  6. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  7. Attentive to detail.
  8. Be fluent in MS office applications, especially MS Excel.
  9. Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  10. Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and Saturdays.
  11. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  12. Be organized, responsible, and flexible: able to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment and maintain composure under pressure.
  13. Fluency in a second language is highly desired (such as: Arabic, Burmese, French, Dari, Spanish).
  14. Regular travel to off-site programs.

Your Responsibilities:

You will be responsible of:

  • Lead the academic coaching program.
  • Plan academic coaching program annual activities in alignment with education and learning unit framework.
  • Recruit, train and manage a team of 4 to 8 social work student interns to serve as academic coaches to support caseloads of up to 25 students each.
  • Oversee school enrollment process for all newly arrived youth, coordination with case management, schools, families, and advocates.
  • Oversee academic coaching program implementation, including intake, client assessment, individualized service planning and implementation, group workshops, and monitoring.
  • Manage administration, caregiver engagement and student support services for Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA).
  • Play a lead role in RYSA planning, including student recruitment and enrollment, staff and volunteer recruitment and hiring, and training.
  • Supervise program staff and volunteers (peer mentors and student support staff) and program activities.
  • Lead the RYSA student support (guidance) team, designing guidance services, overseeing their implementation, and providing counseling as needed; handle disciplinary matters.
  • Provide technical assistance for Saturday learning series and leaders in training program implementation.
  • Facilitate caregiver workshops.
  • Support in the planning and implementation of social-emotional learning opportunities for students.
  • Maintain program information and data collection systems in compliance with IRC standards and contractual obligations, contribute to strengthening program monitoring.
  • Participate in youth program annual logical framework development and implementation, including design monitoring and evaluation activities related to academic coaching and RYSA.
  • Ensure program participants are properly enrolled and files are up to date.
  • Ensure program data is consistently collected and entered in relevant databases accordance with internal program framework and contractual obligations.
  • Prepare annual reports on programs supervised for internal purposes, and prepare contractually required reports for programs supervised.
