The Winchester Poetry Festival invites poets aged 16 years old and above to participate in the Winchester Poetry Prize which aims to surprise and delight. Following its launch in 2016, the prize is now an annual competition.

Participation rules:

[1] The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over

[2] Poems may be on any subject and in any form or style

[3] Poems must be typed and not longer than 40 lines (excluding title)

[4] Poems must be in English, must be the participant’s own work and must not have been published or accepted for publication elsewhere including online, must not have won another poetry competition or be the translated work of another poet

[5] Poems must not include any form of identification because they will be judged anonymously

[6] No person may win more than 1 prize, though more than 1 poem may feature in the list of Commended and Highly Commended poems

[7] Participants do not need to be residents in the UK

[8] Winchester Poetry Festival trustees, employees, associates or members of their families are not eligible to participate

[9] No changes can be made to a poem once it has been submitted

[10] If the poem is longer than 1 page, participants must include the title on each page

Prize:

First place winner will receive £1,000, second place winner will receive £500 and third place winner will receive £250. The winners will be contacted by email or post by September 14, 2020 and the results will be announced at the Winchester Poetry Festival on October 6, 2020, and winners will have to cover their own travel expenses to be present at the festival in the UK. Winning and commended poems will be published in a competition anthology.

What is Winchester Poetry Festival?

Established in 2013, Winchester Poetry Festival is a registered charity in England and Wales. The festival is a biennial event with occasional promotions taking place at other times. The first festival ever took place in September 2014.
