United Nations requires an editor in English. This job is located within the Conference Services Section (CSS), Resource Management and Service Development Division (RMSDD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The English editor reports directly to the chief of CSS.

Eligibility:

You must have:

  1. Knowledge of editorial policies, practices and research techniques. 
  2. Solid writing and analytical abilities with sensitivity to nuance. 
  3. The ability to spot errors and inconsistencies in a text. 
  4. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter.
  5. Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. 
  6. Speaks and writes clearly and effectively.
  7. listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately.
  8. Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication.
  9. Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.
  10. Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position.
  11. Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
  12. A first level university degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. 
  13. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations competitive examination for English language editors.
  14. A minimum of two years of experience in editing for English is required.
  15. Experience in editing within the United Nations is desirable.
  16. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the regional commission: social, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area is desirable.
  17. For this position, perfect command of English, which must be the candidate's main language, knowledge of Arabic and knowledge of another official language of the United Nations, as tested by the relevant United Nations competitive examination for editors or translators and Précis-writers, are required.
  18. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Your Responsibilities:

Within limits of delegated authority, the English editor will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Edits texts of a specialized or technical nature in order to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
  • Consults with author departments and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
  • Checks your language version against the language of the original draft, redrafts incorrect or unclear passages and translates and inserts any passage that has been omitted.
  • Provides authors or others submitting documentation with information on specific aspects of editorial policy and practice and assists them in the preparation of manuscripts.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
