The Whickers is offering The Radio and Audio Funding Award (RAFA) 2020. That is awarded annually to an emerging audio producer based anywhere in the world to produce an original radio or audio documentary which fulfils the core criteria detailed below. This year, a main award of £6,000 plus mentorship from a top industry professional will be awarded to an audio documentary-maker to produce a feature-length programme. We will also be awarding £1,000 each to our four runner-ups.

 Eligibility criteria:

  • Authored Story:
  1. A story-teller with demonstrably strong interviewing skills.
  2. Demonstrates passion for the subject whilst retaining fair-mindedness.
  3. Demonstrates a real sense of independence.
  4. Personal but not partisan.
  5. Wry humour welcome.
  6. Strictly no ‘Whicker impersonations’.
  • Engagement:
  1. Unique access to engaging characters in unusual or inaccessible locations.
  2. A demonstrable flair for coaxing the human spirit into revealing itself.
  3. The author demonstrates intimacy with but does not overshadow the subject.
  • Curiosity:
  1. Spirit of inquisitiveness that leaves viewers wanting more.
  2. Tells us about something new and unexpected about the world.
  3. Excites wonder.
  4. Understands how wit can illuminate the toughest or most nuanced real life drama.
  • Original use of technology:

Playful with story-telling means – breaking new ground and/or using old ground to re-invent new style.

  • Not partisan:

No campaigning, pre-set agendas or political theories.

Award guidelines:

  1. Open to audio producers from anywhere in the world, but the programme must be in the English language.
  2. Award money will either be paid into the award-winner’s registered production company, or to an individual (if they are applying as a sole producer).
  3. Up to six minutes of original taster audio recording is required at the time of applying.
  4. Applicants must have an executive producer on board at the time of applying.
  5. Due to the coronavirus pandemic we are not planning to have a formal, in-person pitching session this year. If applicants reach the shortlist they must be available for an informal discussion with our judges via video conference software in August 2020. Further details will be announced shortly.

About The Whickers:

The Whickers were established in 2015 to fund and recognise original and innovative documentary. We seek to use the generous legacy of our namesake, pioneering broadcaster Alan Whicker, to support emerging film and audio documentary-makers in the production of authored programmes and to recognise exceptional audio that has already been broadcast.
