The University of Oulu is offering two full-time Doctoral Student positions to join a research project headed by Associate Professor Daniela Bezuidenhout in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, Environmental and Chemical Engineering Research Unit at the University of Oulu in the Faculty of Technology, for a maximum of four (4) years.

Position Description:-

  • The research focuses on the development of carbenes and carbene metal complexes, for

    • New template chemical reactivity mediated by transition metal complexes. 

    • The activation of inert covalent bonds found in small molecules. 

    • The application of these fundamental reactions in the catalytic synthesis of organic molecules of relevance. 

  • The aim is to exploit the potential cooperativity possible for carbenes in functions that extend beyond ancillary spectator roles.

Requirements and Conditions:-

  • To successfully occupy the position of a doctoral student, the candidate must possess a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate) preferably in the field of chemistry. 

  • The degree must have been completed with good grades by the time of application. 

  • Ability to pursue independent research and excellent writing and fluency in English is expected. 

  • The doctoral student position is intended for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) who, according to the ”European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, is defined as a researcher in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research activity, including the period of research training. 

  • Applicants will be either starting their doctoral training or will have completed no more than two full years of training (adjusted for possible previous part-time status) at the time the position is filled. 

  • The selected candidate will carry out his/her doctoral studies in the Chemistry Doctoral Programme of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) and must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights as following:

    • Each doctoral student must have a principal supervisor who commits to the supervision of the student’s doctoral training. Without a supervisor and his/her signed commitment letter, the study rights will not be granted. 

    • The applicant and the principal supervisor must ensure that the research site has all needed resources (supervision and other resources) for applicant’s doctoral training.

    • The applicant has completed a relevant Master of Science degree, or an equivalent degree giving eligibility for corresponding university studies in the country that issued the degree.

    • The Doctoral Training Committee evaluates the validity of the previous degree for doctoral training, taking into account the major skills required. 

    • If the applicant plans to undertake doctoral studies in any other field, he/she may be required to follow bridging studies considered necessary to start in the chosen major subject. 

    • All applicants must possess sufficient language skills sufficient to follow doctoral studies.

    • All applicants, who have not completed a secondary or higher education degree in the Finnish language, must demonstrate that they possess sufficient English and/or Finnish language skills with one of the following options:

      • Bachelor or Master degree taught in English.

      • 20 ECTS credits of studies conducted in English in a higher education institution in Finland.

      • Certificate of English language proficiency by Finnish NBE (skill levels 5 in reading, writing, listening & speaking).

      • IELTS score (minimum 6.5, with a minimum of 5.5 in each section; Academic module only).

      • Pearson Test of English (minimum 62, with minimum of 52 in writing section; PTE Academic only).

      • Cambridge ESOL's Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), or of Advanced English (CAE) (grades A, B or C).

      • TOEFL PBT 580 (with a minimum of 4.5 in the Test of Written English, TWE).

      • TOEFL iBT 92 (with a minimum of 20 in Writing section).

      • TOEFL rPDT (Revised Paper-delivered Test) with a minimum score of 20 in the reading section, a minimum score of 20 in the listening section, a minimum score of 22 in the writing section.

  • Statements of skills from the proposed principal supervisor and one independent scientist (anglophone or equivalent language skills) at Oulu University, based on interview.

Salary and Work Benefits:-

The salary will be based on the levels 2 – 4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. 

In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). 

In practice, this equates to 2300 – 3400 € per month (before taxes), depending on the appointee’s personal work performance and progress.
