The European Global Navigation Satellite System Agency (GSA), the only European Union agency working in space is currently hosting a competition in creating innovative approaches for a drone-based application. The aim of the contest is to design, develop, test and prepare for commercial launch a drone-based application and/or service able to provide a position and/or time fix by using Galileo-enabled receiver. Galileo is one of the two Europe’s independent satellite navigation programmes. Through this contest, the GSA aims at encouraging the development of applications and services based on drones using Galileo positioning, offering high accuracy and increased robustness, in order to stimulate business creation in this new, growing, and innovative market. GSA’s mission is to be one of the essentials links between space technology and user needs.

Each participating team will have to propose an application targeting one of the following development areas: Urban air mobility; Parcel Delivery and eCommerce; Infrastructure, Inspection; Leisure; Maritime surveillance; Agriculture; Surveying; Emergency management; Scientific applications; Traffic Management; U-Space Services; Other applications (like calibration of aviation navaids, asset management, advertisement, marketing, entertainment and similar uses).

All applicants must be at least of 18 years of age by the date of registration to the contest. Participants can apply as teams, ideally from 1 to 7 participants, composed by natural persons or legal entities.  Natural persons applicant must be an EU Members States citizen or a citizens of Switzerland or Norway. In the case of legal entities applying to this competition, their central administration or registered office must be located in the EU Member States, Switzerland or in Norway.

All chosen winners will receive various monetary awards. 1st place winners will receive an award of EUR 100.000, 2nd place winners will receive EUR 60.000, 3rd place will receive EUR 40.000 and 4th place winners will receive EUR 30.000.
