The University of Southern Maine (USM) in the USA is offering undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships in various disciplines for outstanding students from all over the world.

Undergraduate Scholarships:

  • All international undergraduate students that apply to the University of Southern Maine will automatically be considered for Academic Merit-Based Scholarships. If the student meets the academic criteria, they will be awarded a merit-based scholarship at the time of admission.
  • Scholarships will be renewable (4 years for first year students and 3 years for transfer students) provided the recipient maintains the required minimum GPA. 

The Scholarships awarded are:

USM Scholar:

  • GPA Requirement: 2.75-2.99
  • The value of this scholarship is $ 8,000 a year, available to 1st year students only.

Dirigo Scholar:

  • GPA Requirement: 3.0-3.49
  • The value of this scholarship is $10,000 a year, available to 1st year students only.

President's Scholar:

  • GPA Requirement: 3.5  
  • The value of this scholarship is $12,000 a year, available to 1st year and transfer students.

Graduate Studies Scholarships:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Students must be matriculated into a graduate program at USM,
  • be enrolled in at least 6 graduate-level credits in each semester in which they receive the award, and 
  • maintain satisfactory academic progress toward their degree (minimum 3.0 GPA).

Selection Criteria:

Scholarship decisions will be based on the following criteria: GPA (minimum 3.0), demonstrated financial need, and a commitment to graduate studies. Applications are reviewed twice per year.

Scholarships Value:

The awards are contingent upon annual available funding and range from a one-year award to a four-year award. Scholarships are awarded in variable amounts up to $3,000 per academic year. Tuition waivers are awarded in flexible credit increments up to eighteen credits per academic year.

About the University of Southern Maine (USM):

Evolving from Gorham Academy into an institution of higher education, USM originated in 1878 as Gorham Normal School. In 1970 that institution merged with the University of Maine at Portland (previously Portland Junior College) and became the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham (UMPG). The name was changed to University of Southern Maine in 1978. The Lewiston-Auburn campus was founded in 1988. USM offers baccalaureate and master's degree programs as well as doctoral programs in Public Policy and School Psychology. Graduate study is available at the Masters and Doctoral level through the School of Business, School of Education and Human Development, Muskie School of Public Service, School of Social Work, School of Music, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Nursing, and the School of Environmental, Health, and Life Sciences.
