The Art Department Association announced the 7th edition of the Alexandria Short Film Festival. This festival is a cinematic celebration held in the month of April every year in Alexandria, Egypt. The festival aims to spread the culture of film to the short. 

Terms and Conditions:

  • The film production date should be after January 1st, 2019.
  • The film should not have premiered at any other screening platform in Egypt prior to its screening at the 7th edition of the Alexandria Short Film Festival. Some exceptions might be made subject to the discretion of the festival’s selection committee.
  • Submissions will be accepted only from films that have not had a public screening partially or fully in Egypt at a theatre, television, on any Internet-based VOD platform, or any other public screening venue prior to the 7th edition’s closing ceremony, which due date will be January 2021.
  • Films submitted to previous editions of the Alexandria Short Film Festival will be disqualified.
  • The maximum duration of eligible films is (30) minutes.
  • The festival accepts submissions of short films in these genres: feature; documentary and anime.
  • Applications submitted after the deadline will be automatically disqualified.
  • In case the film language is other than Arabic, a screening copy with English and Arabic subtitles should be provided.
  • The film director should hold an Arab nationality or have Arab roots.
  • In case a film is submitted while still in the production phase, this should be clearly mentioned in the entry form along with mentioning the final film title, and not the submitted rough-cut title, to avoid perplexing.
  • The festival board reserves the right to use all film materials for promotional purposes and for internal purposes solely. Moreover, the festival holds the right to download; digitalize; copy and save the films and material to DVDs with the purpose of establishing a digital archive at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s Short Films Archive. The festival abstains from screening any films for commercial purposes.
  • The Student Competition targets students of the High Cinema Institute and media departments at public and private Egyptian universities.
  • The film director of the Student Competition should be Egyptian or has Egyptian roots.
  • The jury exerts its own discretion for the selection of films eligible to compete for the festival awards or to screen out of the competition.
  • In case of the official selection in or out of competition, the jury will notify the submitter via email.
  • The festival holds the right to officially announce the selected films in its program. Hence, the submitter should not by any means announce his/her selection results prior to the festival’s official announcement.
  • The festival will announce the final list of selections on January, 1st, 2021.
  • Upon selection, the submitter will have no right to withdraw his/her film, or screen it in any manner that contradicts with the listed screening conditions in the entry form.
  • In case the submitter breached any of the above-mentioned rules and regulations, the festival board has the right to withdraw the film from the festival at its sole discretion.  
  • The film will not be subject to any form of deletion; modification or editing on the festival’s part by any means.

Selection Process:

The festival programmers go through all submission forms and make the final decision pertinent to selections either in or out of competitions. The festival assigns a jury at its absolute discretion who are cherry-picked among experts in the filmmaking industry from all over the Arab World to decide the winners worthy of the festival awards.

Film Screenings Schedule:

The festival board will screen films to the public twice a maximum. The festival holds the right to screen the film before the festival opening ceremony to the jury, with a total of four screenings maximum. The festival board holds the right to specify the dates and order of screenings at its discretion.

Alexandria Short Film Festival is a cinematic celebration held in the month of April every year in Alexandria (Egypt). It was established and organized by the Art Department Association. The festival aims to spread the culture of film to the short. There is no doubt that feature films, documentaries, and short animations are sincere works that contribute to spreading dialogue between cultures, as they deepen our understanding of others’ visions of society, their values, and ideas. The festival also creates dialogue and communication between Arab filmmakers.
