The Center for Human Rights is offering a competition for undergraduate and postgraduate (Master - PhD) Students from all countries in Africa. The purpose of the competition is to encourage students from Africa to express themselves and to engage with issues of relevance to Africa, using available cellphone technology.

Competition Theme:

This year they have introduced the following theme for the competition: Technology and its impact on human rights.
All entries must interpret the theme and keep to the allocated time limit of a maximum of 3 minutes.

Competition Prizes:

R10 000: First prize to winning film $600
R5 000: Best storyline highlighting human rights challenges $300
R5 000: Best cinematography prize $300

Competition Rules:

Those who make the film must be registered as undergraduate or postgraduate students at a university or college in Africa during 2020.
Each film must be a maximum of 3 minutes long, and filmed on a smart phone, ideally one supporting HD.
It may be edited on a computer or other device, using any software available to you.
pay particular attention to sound during and after filming to ensure that all dialogue and sound effects are audible.
The words FACES 2020: African Student Cellphone Film Competition must appear at the start of the film.
Crew and crew information (including university or college affiliation) must appear in the end credits.
The film must explore the theme for this year: Technology and its impact on human rights
The film must be original and be made specifically for the Competition. You may not submit your film to any other competition or festival.
The final cut of the film must be uploaded on YouTube or Vimeo.
The closing date for submissions is 15 November 2020. No submissions will be accepted after this date.
The film must be in fictional form. Animation and special effects may be used.
The film may be in any language. The use of indigenous African languages is encouraged.
Where dialogue is not in English, English subtitles must be provided.

About The Center for Human Rights:

The Center for Human Rights is both an academic department and a non-governmental organisation, and works towards human rights education in Africa, a greater awareness of human rights, the wide dissemination of publications on human rights in Africa, and the improvement of the rights of women, people living with HIV, indigenous peoples, and other disadvantaged or marginalized persons or groups across the continent. The Centre was established in the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, in 1986, as part of domestic efforts against the apartheid system of the time. Members of the Centre participated in meetings with the liberation movements outside the borders of South Africa, organised conferences and participated in efforts to promote human rights in South Africa, and, when the transition came, served as technical advisors to both the interim and final constitution writing processes. The focus of the Centre has now broadened beyond the borders of South Africa. Over the years, it has positioned itself in an unmatched network of practising and academic lawyers, national and international civil servants and human rights practitioners across the entire continent, with a specific focus on human rights law in Africa, and international development law in general.
