Award or Grant Description $$  £15,500 p.a. + research costs

We are offering one full-time PhD scholarship to be based in the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) and the Tizard Centre in the School of Social Policy and Social Research (SSPSSR), University of Kent. The studentship is funded by the NIHR School for Social Care Research (NIHR SSCR). The studentship is available on a full time basis only.
The doctoral student must conduct research relevant to adult social care practice in England and in line with the NIHR SSCR’s Business Plan. NIHR SSCR outlines that the term ‘adult social care’ refers to provision of personal and practice care and support that people may need because of their age, illness, cognition, disability or other circumstances. It also includes support for family members or other unpaid carers. Important aims are to help people remain independent, retain their dignity and achieve a better quality of life.

Eligibility Criteria

We are looking for an applicant who is enthusiastic about research and can become part of our research community. Applicants will need an excellent (minimum 2:1) undergraduate degree and a good Masters in a relevant discipline (equivalent to merit or distinction with a substantial research training component, or be willing to undertake additional research methods training).

Offered Benefits

Funding will be provided for a studentship starting in January 2021, and includes:

  • a stipend of £15,500 per year;
  • EU/home PhD registration fees as set by the University*; and
  • up to £10,000 across the three years for reasonable and justified research costs.

Application Process

In order to be considered for the studentship, applicants should apply via the University of Kent’s online application system and ensure that all documentation including references are submitted on time. As part of the application process applicants will be asked to submit a research proposal explaining the work to be undertaken during the studentship that is in line with the NIHR SSCR’s business plan and the research interests of PSSRU and Tizard Centre (maximum 2,500 words including references). The research proposal should explore potential plans for remote data collection during the coronavirus pandemic.

Informal enquiries regarding academic matters, studying at Kent or your potential research plans should be made to Dr Michelle McCarthy ([email protected]) or Dr Karen Jones ([email protected]). Enquiries regarding the application process should be made to [email protected]
