Job Summary/Purpose:

The Medical Assisting Program seeks a qualified individual to serve as MA Program Lab Assistant. Lab Assistants will assist the MA course director in the education and evaluation of student performance in the lab experience.

Terms of Employment:
• This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position
• Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

1. Assist with instruction in the MA course lab under the direction of the MA course director/faculty member.
2. Cooperate with other College personnel including the Medical Assisting Program Director to assist students with career planning, job placement, and follow-up studies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Thorough knowledge in the field of medical assisting
2. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
3. Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
4. Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer-controlled mixed media presentations.
5. Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials.
6. Ability to verbally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
7. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Program Director, MA Lead Instructor and other program staff and faculty on a regular basis.
8. Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
9. Ability to work with Medical Assisting Program Director, faculty, Department Chair, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.
10. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
11. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Working hours are regular, per the established work schedule. Work is performed in an ordinary lab, mostly standing. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature with the ability to sit or stand at for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Able to complete the essential job functions listed above with or without reasonable accommodation. Work is typically performed standing. Must be able to safely lift 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Education: Medical Assisting certificate/degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning that includes course work equivalent to the uniform certificate degree in Medical Assisting as approved by the Oregon State Board of Education and offered by Oregon’s community colleges.
2. Experience: One year of Medical Assisting or other related field
a. Certifications: Medical Assisting (CMA or CCMA), or LPN, or RN
